Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Suddenly waking early at 3.5 months

Hi there! My daughter is 3.5 months and has been sleeping 9 & 10 hours straight a night since she was 4 weeks old (praises!) But this week she is suddenly waking up at 5 or 5:30. I've tried to rock her back to sleep but have ended up just feeding her and then putting her back in her crib, which she will then sleep for another 2 or 3 hours.  Does this sound like the 4 month sleep regression? Also, do y'all recommend just trying to rock her back down, since she has been usually sleeping that much in the past or should I continue to do what I have been doing the past few nights? Also, for facts sake, her naps have not changed during the day and neither has her feedings. She is still eating every 3.5/4 hours during the day. Could this also possibly be early teething? Any feedback is much appreciated!

  • It's a bit early for teething.  Just because your baby was sleeping one way doesn't mean they will continue to do so.  Babies sleep habits change a lot the first year.

I would continue to feed her and then put her back down (and be grateful she goes back down!).  It's very normal to still be feeding in the middle of the night.  DD and DS both woke once in the early morning to nurse till they were weaned at 13 and 14 mos.

  • We experienced the same thing! Our daughter started waking up at 4:30 every morning. I wish I had some advice. We just managed, and more her six month sleep regression started.
  • I read once that at around that age, they start eating less throughout the day because they're more aware of the world all of a sudden and they get impatient with feedings because they'd rather be looking around. So they take less per feeding during the day and then they need to make up for it at night. I thought that seemed pretty logical and I think the only solution is to push through it.

That is what my DD started doing so now I feed her in a quiet and dim room so she has less distractions!

That's basically it. Then tack on the 4 month wakeful. Sigh. Story of our life for the last month.
