Re: Bottle/nursing and Sleeping poll

  • DS takes 3 bottles: 7am, 11am, and 4pm. He eats meals at 8:30am, 12:30, and 6. His naps are 9:30am and 1:30pm. So no bottles before any sleep times for him. This has been his routine for a while. He is a SS and hasn't wanted a bottle at bedtime for at least a month or two. So we try to fill him up at dinner and he goes all night without any issues.

  • I put that I don't intentionally do it but sometimes it's intentional. I suck at keeping a set schedule so things happen at different times every day. If we happen to be getting close to her being ready for a nap and it is also within maybe an hour or so until her next bottle, I might try to feed her early or keep her up a while longer in hopes that she will sleep better if we get the bottle in her before she falls asleep.

  • DD always has one before bedtime, but any bottle before naps are just coincidences.

  • Besides Hudsons breakfast bottle, all bottles correlate to sleep.

  • My toddler still nurses to sleep. It's the only sure thing I have in life. If I want her to nap, I nurse her approx between 10am-1pm (she's pretty flexible). Always falls asleep....suckaaaaa. If I want her to stay awake, I just avoid nursing her.

  • So, like...what are y'all planning to do when you ditch the bottle? Do you think it will be a big deal or no?

  • He usually has a bottle before naps and bedtime. The bottle makes him so sleepy.
@sleepy33‌ I'm kind of terrified to lose the bottle. Ugh.

I have given him a bottle to help get him back down if he wakes in the MOTN b/c he's sick or teething, so that will suck not to have as an option anymore...

  • Similar to @PharmDMom‌. Beau hasn't had a bottle or meal directly before bed in a very long time. His sleep is in no way affected by this.

  • It has always lined up just right, but now with big brother at preschool, it's a little off, and she's fine without it. When we ditch the bottle, we'll just go to a sippy of milk before nap and bed. My 3 almost 4 year old still gets a sippy of milk before rest and bed, so I'm not that worried about stopping it.

I was thinking about this last night. I super don't know what I will do. My kid is so hard to get down for a nap, and nursing him down is my only trick. My mom says she just puts him down when she watches him and let's him fuss it out in the crib. I want to wean at 12 mos, so I need to start getting him out of the habit now. Scared.

  • It has always lined up except last night he refused to take the bottle to go to sleep and fought sleep.  So maybe it is time to lose it at bedtime..

I am terrified to find out. I feel like he is SO dependent on the bottle to go to sleep. Our house will probably be pure hell for a couple weeks after we ditch the bottle.

Or we can be like my friends 2.5 y/o who still drinks from her bottle every single day.....

You know what's interesting, is why is it ok (for their teeth/mouth formation thing) to nurse forever, but not use bottles? Curious.

bc the way their jaw is positioned to nurse versus bottle is different. also, bottles constantly drip, even when not being sucked on, so it can leave a pool of sweet milk, causing tooth decay.....that's why you're always supposed to supervise bottle use at night, and remove when they're done, and not let them keep it all night.

  • We always do too.. Nap and bedtime.. I really don't know how taking out the bottle will work.. Like no idea how to even begin to do this.. She doesn't fall asleep while eating but it's a tummy fill up before sleeping so I'm scared to take it away too :/
  • This kid only falls asleep with a bewb. I created a monster.
  • We always nurse before sleep. It works for us. When it no longer works, we will figure something else out.
  • For me, there must be a boob primarily involved. He will also fall asleep in the car but doesn't stay asleep for transfer (convertible seat). Sometimes falls asleep during runs in the jogger or wile BWing.

For other people he will go to sleep sans bottle nicely.

No plans to wean at 1 year. Still planning on having DH give bedtime bottle of pumped breastmilk the nights I am at work. Ditto @kimbo1216‌, we will do this til it doesn't work. Maybe age 2 reevaluate.
