Sounds of your hood?

I'm sitting on my porch drinking half caf half decaf coffee and taking in my neighborhood. I realize we have a few short months before out babies are born and its easy to get jammin' in our day-to-day lives. So just a fun, slow it down, question...what are the sounds you hear at your house or in your hood?

Today, Saturday, I hear the farmers market set up across the street from my house (lucky me), I hear traffic, birds, and people chatting. I live in a pretty busy part of Portland, Or in a neighborhood that is kid friendly but never a dull moment!

Re: Sounds of your hood?

  • Sounds of traffic on wet road behind house, lots of birdsong because it is a wet, cool morning and they are happy about that after some sweltering days this week, neighbour's humming a/c (such a waste of energy and $$ -- turn it OFF and open your windows; it's cold today!!!), and the occasional car starting up to drive away. A very quiet suburban crescent. If it was not raining there would certainly be the sounds of kids playing outside.

  • City living....people walking in the street, car traffic, occasional car horns, runners, people walking their dogs, and delivery/moving trucks.

  • Ok so based on some of the other piercings threads, I saw this going in a totally different direction.

Anyways, my neighborhood is full of old people so I don't hear much besides the sounds of our house. It's from the 20's so it's super old and makes lots of creaking sounds all day and night.

  • We live in a small suburb with a pond out back. We hear a lot of birds, ducks, occasional car. For the most part it's pretty quiet out here.

  • I hear a 2yo yelling mom! Mom! Mom! Milk prease? Gubble guppies prease? Frozen prease? Mom! Mom! And Sofia the first on the tv.

    Outside, dogs barking and cars.

  • Weekend mornings are usually quiet. Someone is mowing today. We live in a new neighborhood so during the week there is construction noise a couple blocks away. There's only a few open lots left, so hopefully that ends soon.
Luckily our street is complete, we were the last ones to move in last winter. Kids should be out soon, lots of 2-6 yr olds on our street.

  • We live in a small unfinished neighborhood (only 55 lots, so only about 1/3 of them have homes already built) This weekend is really quiet with only birds & crickets singing after our light rain this morning. It's the best!

@BankerBSN‌ - This is why you need to move to the Northside. ;)

(Then again I am not sure if I want you living closer since I love my skin not being part of a coat)

I actually heard gunshots the other night. It's either that or fireworks. I live in a small town so I can never be sure.

  • Birds chirping, my back neighbor out watering, cars driving down the street, & my son watching TV.
  • We live in the city on a pretty busy street.  I hear cars going by, the occasional car horn honking. I also hear my kids playing a Mario Brothers Wii game. Dont judge.

  • I live in a small town, quiet neighborhood. Think "Ozzie and Harriet" (yep, i watched that old black n white show with my mom growing up). That "can i borrow a cup of sugar?" kind of neighborhood. Quiet today. Just birds and trees. Lawn mowers this morning. Going to the lake soon.
  • Today just the rain and thunder, we live on the dead end of a quiet residential street so we really only hear the occasional car, and when it's nice out our extremely loud and obnoxious neighbors yelling. My favorite is late at night hearing the freight trains going by the Hudson and hearing the tug boats coming in and out of the harbor

I envy you for rain and thunder!!!! We are in 100 degree weather for what seems like eternity!

  • pretty much nothing. Occasionally some Cicadas but my large subdivision is usually very quiet.
  • I hear just traffic. I live right next to a main road and it is busy all day all night. If it wasn't for the traffic it would be pretty peaceful since we don't have much going on around us. If I was facing the back of the building it would be more peaceful. But, the kids play on the opposite side of my building but I would much rather hear them than traffic. This morning was special since I was woken up by landscapers so that blocked out the traffic. At least our lawn looks good.

  • Right now, two little flat-faced dogs snorting (my french bulldog & mom's pug), the occasional neighborhood dog barking, cars passing.

  • We live in a quiet neighborhood, though we do have neighbors with dogs on all 3 sides of our backyard. If one of them starts barking, our dogs go crazy and begin barking. It's really fucking annoying to be quite honest, but I guess I can't complain if that's all we hear!

  • I hear the hum of the ceiling fan, listening to Roseanne on TVLand and thunder outside. I'm about to go downstairs and cook dinner though - I've been secreting myself away upstairs since I had to escape the other sounds of the house - college football (after 5 mins DH changes the channel) Golf (after 5 mins DH changes the channel) Tennis and to complete the channel changing cycle - The Basketball World Cup.

Luckily I can go back to not hearing that anymore, in the kitchen.

  • The very rare sound of tires on the wet road, the breeze moving the branches and leaves in the woods across the road and behind our house, the overgrown hay field rustling, crickets and summer bugs doing their thing, birds occasionally, though they're kind of quiet this time of day. At night when everything else is quiet I can sometimes hear the sounds of the equipment on the strip mining site behind the house, but usually not during the day unless they're on the near side of the hill. I love summer/early fall in rural PA. It's peaceful.

  • I live in the Suburbs in a neighborhood off a country road. It's a very kid friendly neighborhood with most kids being between 3-12 so there is always the sounds of kids playing, laughing and yelling. Add to that lawns being mowed and a few dogs barking(including mine) it's a pretty typical neighborhood.

At this moment I'm listening to a light putter patter of rain and some thunder in the distance. The sound right now is quite intoxicating.....until I hear my washer running in the background reminding me of......laundry. There is always laundry.
  • There is a community garden and a park across the street, and I often hear children playing and laughing and even squealing.    I also hear cars going by and the occasional dog barking (my least favorite sound!)
  • Wow what a variety of sounds! Gunshots do put annoying neighborhood dogs in perspective. I used to live in a neighborhood with regular gunshots and don't miss that at all!
  • We hear gunshots on the reg, but we live in the woods and its hunting season soon! (<---is super thankful for friendly fire only!)

Other than that, outside is our cows, bugs buzzing, chickens, very rarely the horses when they get riled up by something, and dogs barking. If the wind blows right we can hear the neighbors when they use their power equipment (tractors, splitters, whatever)

Inside- kids playing/fighting/crying/singing, the cats wrestling, and lately cans popping, I LOVE canning time!

  • I posted my neighbor problems yesterday in the bitching thread. Soooo yeah..... Sounds aren't good but my next door neighbor usually is cooking up something with all her windows open so smells are good :)
  • @agsgrrl smells being good is a great thing, especially while preggo! Shitty neighbors suck though. Tough to do anything about that. Enjoy the smells in the meantime.
