Pregnant after a Loss

Doppler question

So I got my doppler (Baby Sound B) in Friday after my amazing appointment Thursday and tried to pick up a HB twice with no luck. I know it works cause I hear...something, movement, gas, I really don't know what and I can find my heart rate but not babies. Now I'm kind of freaking out, but hoping maybe I just don't know what I'm doing. I'm 12 weeks 2 days today and it specifically says usable at 12 weeks. Maybe LO is just being uncooperative or in a funny position. Thoughts? Do you think if I take it with me Monday when I get my blood work done they can help or at least offer to use one of theirs to calm my PgAL brain?

Re: Doppler question

  • You have to be super, super patient and move the Doppler super slow, esp around 12 weeks. It was (and still is!) super hard for me to pick up my LOs heartbeat (even now at 20 weeks) due to him being in a funny position, moving constantly, etc. keep at it - but try to move barely at all starting a few inches below belly button in the center and see if that works. It took me a long time to figure it all out! Good luck!

  • I was able to find LO's heartbeat around 12 weeks with my doppler. It was very tricky and often really faint, faint enough that my doppler had a hard time registering a number. I recommend going to youtube and watching videos of other's using the doppler, so you can at least hear what you should be listening for.   Also, with mine I would scan other parts of my body (carotids/neck, heart, wrist, etc) just so I would know what my own sound was and how consistent it was compared to LO's.

  • I was just going to say try You Tube. I haven't tried using a doppler before but I have a few friends who said You Tube videos helped.

  • I third the youtube tip. Also, once you find it a couple times it will be so much easier for you. You'll know where to look the next time.

  • I watched YouTube videos and had to be very, very patient when trying to find the hb with my Doppler. I didn't even order mine until I was 12 weeks bc it's so hard to find then. I think I first found the hb at 13.5 weeks and it took me quite a while. Very slow movement and applying a lot of pressure helped pick it up.

  • -Yes, YouTube.
    -Yes, patience!

My little bugger was right behind my pelvic bone, making it hard to pick him up. (Even the u/s tech would get very frustrated with him.) Also, if LO moves a lot, it can make it hard to pick something up.

They say the doppler can read at 12 weeks because some people can and they want to sell them. It really is a very frustrating experience, but once you do find it (whether now or later), it really is worth it.

But please, do not let it worry you now!

  • Ditto to what everyone else said.  I'll add - try experimenting with an empty or full bladder and different times of the day.  I definitely had an easier time finding her first thing in the morning before I got out of bed and jiggled her or emptied my bladder.

  • It took me an hour to find it the first time. I was looking way too high; she was still super, super low. I didn't try to find it until 15 weeks though because I have a tilted uterus, and up until that point, the doc's office couldn't even find it with the doppler. So I made myself wait until the doc could find it :)

Be patient, and look low and slow.
