I have. Sweet potatoes, apples, bananas. She hate the grain cereals.
We started now because she is a little small. Only 11 lbs 12oz last week at her appointment. She has not even doubled her birth weight and in the 5% for weight. She is EBF and refuses any type of formula. Pedi wanted to start a little food to hopefully get her a little weight. I know of won't give her a lot of calories but every little bit helps. Plus she is interested, trying to grab food off plates . She loves it
We started with rice cereal a little after 4 months but the babies weren't having it. I tried again the other day and they liked it. Once I use up this box I am going to start oatmeal and then at 6 months do fruits and veggies one by one.
We started with purées at 4 months. Tried to do cereal but it made him very gassy. He eats a variety of fruits and veggies, so far he hasn't turned anything down. I did strictly veggies for the first two weeks.
We will be starting with peaches and pears this week so her dad can be a part of the experience before DD and I move cross country. Despite what everyone irl is telling me, we are skipping cereals as well. Techincally her 'first food' was pasta sauce. She slammed her hand in my plate and shoved it in her mouth before I could clean it off. She seemed to enjoy it though!
We're using Ella's ...just started Sunday, DD is 4.5 months, we started with Apples, Carrots and parsnips. ..she LOVES it! We'll try peas and pears next.
My little man started a week before 4 months. He really really needed the food we have done sweet potatoes , peas, pears and winter squash. We also do rice Cereal with a bottle his second feeding
We were told to start at 4 mo bc LO was 19 lbs and drinking max formula, so she didn't want us to add anymore when he was wanting more to eat. We waited until he seemed to need an increase. He loves to eat and his reflux is way better with solids so we are already at 3 meals per day. Oatmeal and fruit in the AM, veggies for lunch and dinner. We are doing pears, apples, sweet potatoes, and carrots. I tried peas today and he hated them. Pretty funny to watch.
Aren't yams usually canned with syrup? I bought fresh sweet potatoes, we steamed them until soft, and puréed them. No added anything.
Eta: we haven't frozen anything so far, pretty much making only enough for a few days and making adult versions of the rest of the veggies. It's actually kinda been good for mom and dad's diet.
We've done oatmeal, apples and avacados. Just got a sweet potato so I'll make that for her when this round of apples is done. She loves it all. Holding off on bananas because she's not a great pooper.
We started at 5 months with applesauce because we had some and wanted to see if she was really ready. Since then we've given her those pouch things of carrots, peaches, peas (which she loved), butternut squash, strawberries with apples, broccoli with apples, she even tried a little lemon and loved it. We have also tried bananas (jarred and smashed real banana) but so far she has hated that every time.
Sweet potatoes and yams (garnet, jewel) are the same thing in my mind. There may be a technical distinction between the two, but they are essentially the same vegetable. We just started Tessa on avocado two days ago, and I have some sweet potato purée frozen in ice cube trays that I plan on starting very soon. Butternut squash is next after that.
Sweet potatoes are yellowish in color and are like a regular russet potato in texture. Yams are much oranger and bake up with a candy like quality. I love baked or grilled yams, but not sweet potatoes.
If the grocery store labels it a sweet potato I'm calling it a sweet potato. But yes, the orange, sweet, root vegetable you describe is what we've been feeding him.

Yep this is our story too expect DS is less than 1% in weight.
Sweet potatoes (light colored flesh) and "yams" (orange colored flesh) are both varieties of sweet potato. Yam is a misnomer and is in reality a totally different plant indigenous to Africa.

When we start her on food at 6 months, we'll be doing this. I think my stash would go to waste otherwise!

I did this with my purées for dd. Worked just fine. But if I didn't have any BM fresh I just added a smidge of water.

Some veggies like sweet potato and carrot require quite a bit of liquid before they can be frozen and/or fed as purées. If I'm cooking and freezing those vegetables, I will add water into the mix while it's being puréed. When I'm ready to actually feed the purée, I will hand express a few teaspoons of breastmilk into the smashed up vegetable to thin out the food.
