Our room is downstairs and DD is upstairs. We do not have central air, just window units and a floor furnace, so I can't shut her door at night. At what age would you be comfortable putting her in a big kid bed?
She is 2 years, 8 months now, no complaints or attempts to climb out of her crib, although she has just transitioned from a pack n-play to a regular bed with rails at grandma's house.
Re: two story house and big kid bed
If you aren't going to gate off her room then I'd only feel comfortable when I knew she could safely get herself down the stairs. I'd just look for a gate that has a different type of locking latch on it. These were the ones I had. You have to push the red latch back and lift at the same time:

She's great on the stairs, so I don't really worry about her actually going up and down them, more so about her being loose and unsupervised upstairs. There's nothing crazy dangerous, just makes me paranoid that she'd come out of her room and climb up on the bath tub and split her head open or something, you know?
Oh, and that is the gate we had. My PARENTS can't open them half the time, but my tiny toddler does it like nobody's business.
Yeah, this is sort of where I'm at. She's really petite, so it's not like she's anywhere near being cramped and other than one "I slept in a big girl bed at grandma's!" comment has never complained. She is a great sleeper, so i'm inclined to just leave her in the crib as long as we can.

I may be ahead of myself here, though since my son has started PT'ing early. (Not bragging, just admitting our timelines could be off). Since he's started at two I'd expect by your child's age we'd be doing night time potty training (though I may be eating my words later).
