Restricted Growth/Tiny Baby being induced at 37 weeks: Questions to ask OB

I was just recommended by a perinatologist to be induced at 37 weeks because of the baby's small abdomen  (1st percentile). It's scary.

If anyone has any recommendations on questions to ask my OB when I see her on Monday, I'd appreciate.

Also, anyone's recommendations on things that happened at being induced at 37 weeks or things they wish they would have done differently, I would love to hear them.

Re: Restricted Growth/Tiny Baby being induced at 37 weeks: Questions to ask OB

  • i did not go through iugr...but some questions to ask would be: is baby healthy but small or are there concerns for her safety besides size?, how did the cord doppler look on u/s are there cord flow issues? what is the afi (fluid level...10-25 is normal range) ? is the placenta in ok condition or starting to showage? what are risks to delivering at 37w vs. letting baby stay in for 2 more? what are risks to keeping baby in? are nst or bpp tests 2x weekly an option if you wait until 39 for induction? am i favorable for induction now? will baby need special support and is the hospital equipped? good luck! i hope you are holding your tiny but healthy baby sometime in the next few weeks.

  • I was induced at 37 weeks for HBP issues with both my kids and probably with this one as well (RSC). Ended up with healthy, tiny, babies. First was 5lbs 11oz & second was 5lbs even. My second one had been monitored for IUGR since around 26 weeks. No extra stay for either, both fine. I consider my case fortunate as it might not always be smooth. Good luck with everything.
  • Hi! I was induced at 37w6d for IUGR. My daughter was 5lbs 12oz at birth and now, at 16 months is in the 97th percentile for height and weight. Some babies just do better outside of the uterus! Good luck!
  • I was induced at 36 weeks due to severe pre eclampsia (it came on over the coarse of a few hours and got really severe really fast) and IUGR. I had a 20 hr labor and LO only weighed 3 lbs 7 ozs. She had her cord wrapped around her neck twice and her placenta also sectioned off making a satillite placenta. She also had a 9 day nicu stay due to being very tiny.

questions: should you get steroid shots to help develop lungs? Is it necessary for the shots? What are the chances of a nicu stay? How long of a nicu stay are you looking at if the lungs are developed? (I say ask this because I was induced and right after they started pitocin told me LO had to be transferred to a different hospital) are there nicu beds open for LO? What are the chances LO will have to be transferred

  • My dd was born at 38.3 weeks due to iugr. Luckily for us she was in the 7-8th percentile at 5lb 5oz. She did great with her sugar and temperature control but stayed 5 days in the special care nursery for feeding issues and high bilirubin levels. She's now a happy healthy 4 year old. She has never been above the 10th percentile on the growth charts until this year when she's in the 30th- holy growth spurt! Praying your lo will do just fine!

  • Thank you for sharing and all the kind words. I'm over my initial shock that she will coming so early but still a little apprehensive about the risks of having to have a c-section and her coming so small and early but trying to remain positive in the meantime. I will post an update in a couple of weeks after the birth.
