anyone getting the T-dap/tetanus?

So, at my routine appointment last week my O.B suggested getting a tetanus shot at my 28 week appointment. I asked her what the benefits were as I'd never heard of that before and she gave me a very vague "well its always good to be vaccinated..." And I left slightly confused.

Are any of you ladies getting it/not getting it?
Anyone who feels passionately one way or the other please enlighten me!

  • It also protects you from whooping cough. And I also agree with your dr. It's better to be safe than sorry esp when your growing a human.
  • I got it on Wednesday and my arm has been sore ever since! Better than whooping cough though.

  • Yep, the new research shows that the pertussis part of the shot can give your baby some immunity as well, so I'll be getting it.

  • I will be getting this shot asap. I HATE needles, but more and more people are refusing vaccines for b.s. reasons and whooping cough outbreaks are occurring all over.

If you're unsure about this vaccine, there are videos on of babies infected with Pertussis that will change your mind. It's horrific and not anything I could watch my baby go through.
  • I hope I can get one--my GP have me a booster when I first found out I was pregnant back in April, which I mentioned to my OB at my check up this week. She seemed perplexed that he did so, saying it's best to get in third tri for the passive immunity purposes that PP have cited. She's going to check on whether I can get another in three weeks at my next appt. will at least be getting the flu shot then.

  • After my pertussis scare this past school year, I will definitely be getting it in 3rd Tri. My MW also told me, when my school was having a Pertussis outbreak they couldn't do anything for me until 3rd Tri.

I got mine Wednesday too and my arm is still sore! Still I would recommend getting it.

My pregnancy brain was so bad this week I thought until this afternoon that my arm was sore from sleeping funny. I totally had forgotten I got the shot.

Umm... coming late to this thread but is there a medical reason why you would consider not being vaccinated?

That said, I just spoke to my OB about making sure i was up to date on everything and they recommend the TDAP during the 3rd trimester and they have given the OK to get the flu shot.

  • It is recommended for all pregnant women 1) Some of it passes along to baby. 2) It includes a Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine. Pertussis can be fatal for baby.

I am making my husband get a TDaP booster as well before Baby is born.

Ditto. We are also telling the grandparents about the benefits of the vaccine for baby girl in the hopes that they will get it too.

  • Just got mine yesterday. The nurse recommended that anyone handling the newborn get it too- dads, grandmas, grandpas,etc.. So I just kind of mentioned that to my mom and she was all over it and planning out when they'd all be getting theirs lol. I hope that doesn't make me sound like one of those germophobe moms now. I only told them what the nurse said and never actually said they HAD to get it done. I would never force anyone... Except I will force MH, but that's mostly bc I've been all kinds of poked and prodded these past 6 months and now it's his turn :D

  • I got mine a few weeks ago and it put my arm out of commission for days and gave me a low grade fever but totally worth it in my opinion!! My Dr also said my husband should get it as well which he will be. Whooping cough is dangerous and I see no reason NOT to get it, knowing you are protecting your baby!!
  • MH and I just got them last August... But it looks like I will be getting it again. I'm not sure if there would be any benefit to MH getting it again. I'll have to ask my Dr.

  • Both my husband and I got it two days ago along with a flu shot; my OB recommended it so we don't get sick
  • I got a booster 3 yrs ago before I got pregnant last time. I will be getting another booster at my next appt at 27 weeks. Pertussis is very serious and dangerous for infants, DH also got a booster 3 yrs ago.

  • A better question seems to be who's NOT getting it! :-) I hate to use the word "routine" but that's what it is. To protect you, but most importantly, the baby. Close family got boosters when my first was born so they won't need to again. But I will suffer a sore arm so I can pass immunity to my lo. Not sure why your doctor couldnt answer such a simple question.

YH shouldn't need another one. I asked my OB about that last week. It's recommended for pregnant women to pass some protection to the baby.

I got it Wednesday. I told the MA about how I hate needles too. Then I got it and it wasn't bad at all. I could actually look at the shot as it was being given.

  • Thank you ladies for all the info! I'm glad to hear it's pretty standard procedure and the benefits. Knowing that, I'll definitely be getting it and probably be prodding DH to do the same ;)
  • I believe the booster last ten years so if you H got one in that time frame he is good. I will be getting my tdap on my next visit. Unfortunately, I have to do the Rhogam shot, TDap shot, and my Glucose blood draw all on the same day. Uggh. I could put off the tdap and go to my gp but f it. I will be getting my flu shot, just not sure if it is available yet.

  • If you get a tetanus shot does it automatically include pertussis? Is there such a thing as getting a tetanus shot that is not also a TDap shot?

  • I'm waiting till my 32ish week appt. Mainly because I like that OB better than the one at my 28 week. Hahaha. But an achy arm and a little blah feeling isn't bad. I wish there was an RSV one they could give you like that. I actually have a huge fear of RSV since #1 had it when he was 6 months old (3 months ajusted age since he was a preemie).

  • @path75 I am getting all that done at my next appointment too. Mine is in 2 weeks. I got my flu shot last week when I went it. I'm going to feel like a pincusion ;)
  • I last got it in early 2013 when I was pregnant with my son and for all the reasons already listed I'll be getting it again this pregnancy probably around 30-31 weeks. My OB recommends it.

  • I'll be getting it, as will hubby and his parents (anyone who will be around the baby a lot). Yes, you can get Tetanus boosters that don't include Pertussis, but the TDaP is the combo. Can't believe whooping cough and polio are actually making comebacks (don't get me started on anti-vaxxers).

  • I got mine yesterday along with the rhogam shot. Ironically, the Tdap didn't hurt, but now my arm is so sore. The Rhogam hurt like hell, but my butt is not sore at all from it.
  • Everyone in my house is getting one, because I am immune compromised, and the baby will be for 6 months, longer if I breastfeed, which I will likely not.

I have requested to my mother and mother in law that they get one, but I can't really force the issue.
