I had no idea how to spell my middle name until grade three because I never needed to. My step kids never use their middle names in school either. Tell your ils to stfu.
No way! First and last names is all the kids use in school. The only time I had to use my middle name is when there was a boy in my class with the same initials and we were supposed to just use initials on a paper/craft. Even then I only needed the first letter of my middle name.
Well then DS is screwed because he has two middle names. Your ILs need to mind their own business. Giving you a hard time about your child's name is so not cool.
Fun fact. In the Philippines, you have to learn how to write your whole name in Kindergarten. And it's very common practice for your name to be First Name, Middle Name, Mother's Maiden Name, and then Last Name. And you write this on all forms and paperwork from there on.
I started 5th grade when I came to the US. Teachers were so confused as to what name I should go with since I always wrote my whole entire name as I was used to.
And....it doesn't help that Filipinos always go by a nickname, which is usually never the first or middle name. DH thinks it's the dumbest thing ever.
My daughter's middle name is Anna & I use it a lot when I call her name. Her first name is short. It'd be like adding Anna to Julie & it sounding like one name. I was going to make it part of her first name, but didn't- figuring I could still use it. I have started teaching her it only because I want to.
As a former teacher, kids never wrote their middle names!!
DD's middle name is Jane, which is my mom's middle name, and also one of my aunts' names. She also has my last name as a second middle name, but I figure it's up to her whether she wants to use it. It's on her birth certificate, but we don't really use it elsewhere. My middle name is my mom's last name.

It took me forever to learn how to spell my MN. My MN makes my whole name sound like a stripper stage name. Thanks mom!
