Breast feeding mamas

Hi I was wondering for how long and how often your new little ones breast feed for? My new little one eats about every 2-4 hours, but only eats anywhere from 5-10 minutes each time. Usually once a day she's extra hungry and will go for 15-20 minutes. I see her pediatrician Monday so I will check with him of course, too, but wondering what the rest of you were averaging? Thanks!

  • That sounds about right. My lo only nurses for one side though. Ds was the same just very efficient and I have a strong let down. It wasn't until he got older he ate both sides

  • LO is 5 days old she eats about every 1-2 hours sometimes will want again after 30 mins. So far LO has not gained any weight. It makes me wonder if I produce enough supply for her

  • Sounds normal to me. If she's still hungry after the first 10 min feeding, you should prob be able to tell by the obvious hunger cues... Sucking noises, rooting, etc.

  • Dd3 is 3 days old and my milk just came in this evening so up until this point she has done giant clusters where she will want to nurse constantly for hours (seriously 2+ hours of eat, doze, eat) and then sleep for 1-3 hours. Hopefully things will even out a little now with her getting a little more in her tummy.

  • Thank you everyone! My LO was born at 35 wks and spent time in the NICU just to have a feeding tube until she ate like a term newborn. Our first day home was yesterday so I think I'm a little more obsessed than I need to be over her eating. Overprotective/over worried mama already :). She is having enough wet diapers so that's reassuring.
  • My LO is a little over a week old. At first we had to supplement after each feeding, so he was lasting up to three hours between feeds.

Yesterday, we were given the ok to stop supplementing. He now goes about 2/2.5 hours and feeds for about 10-20 minutes on each side.

  • I feed LO who is 5 days old (or will be in 3 hours...) every 1.5-2.5 hours for about 10-15 min one side, then 5 on the other so she can get some hind milk topper and I can relieve a bit of hardness in that breast until my next feeding where I'll start on the 5min breast. :)

  • My DD is less than two days old. Last night I had to fight to keep her awake long enough for a proper feeding every 2-4 hours. Tonight she has kept me up feeding almost constantly. In the past 6 hours I have had one 25 minute nap and two 15 minute naps between marathons. My milk still hasn't come in so I expect this to calm down to what others are mentioning once it does... she's certainly helping it along!

This is giving me hope. DS is <2 days as well - exact same situation.

  • The whole time we were in the hospital (about 3 days), LO was constantly snacking. Literally like every half hour, and I only had two times where she went longer than an hour. I was starting to get worried though because we weren't seeing many wet diapers, and our first day home (yesterday), she hadn't pooped or peed for over 24 hours. She was very sleepy, but I made sure to wake her up at least every 2 hours so I knew she was staying hydrated/fed. This morning she finally went...she wet through her diaper and had a major poo explosion haha.
