What's your favorite baby/kids book?

I'm going to a baby shower tomorrow and they requested giving a book instead of a card. I love this idea! Some books are the same price as a card and you can still write a little message in there. It'll also build your library. So my question is, what are some of your favorites or must haves? I always turn to the ones I remember loving as a child. Wednesday is Spaghetti Day, Big Birds Twelve Days of Christmas and Berenstein Bears..

Re: What's your favorite baby/kids book?

  • I still cherish my first hard cover of Babar.

    November Siggy Challenge: Selfie Fails

Hidden for the sake of your eyes!

  • Loading the player...
  • Raffi books down by the bay and baby beluga (sang them to DD). When she got older she sang the words too
  • I'm still a Goodnight Moon girl. And The Hungry Hungry Caterpillar
  • I bought a book for my DS called If I Could Keep You Little. It's really cute, but I cannot remember the author off hand (and I'm not home to check).
  • @GiveMeABrownieNow‌ your list is great! I think I was the same way. We always read a book before bedtime. Thankfully my mom saved all my books so I'll get to read them to our LO. I also remember all the Shel Silverstein books. And the Very Jolly Postman! I kind of want to do a book themed nursery. We aren't finding out the sex so this could be a way to go.
  • Anything Eric Carle, Nancy Tillman, Robert Munsch, or Dr.Seuss. There's actually a whole line of "Dr. Seuss Nursery" books, which are simplified board book versions of the originals, and they are quite good! The book "Welcome Baby" by Barbara Reid is also really good.

We received "on the night you were born" and this is one of my favorite books to read my LO. We are Also big fans of Sandra Boynton board books.

This, DD insists on reading it every night. OP, I'm glad you think this is a good idea, but I caution you using it for a shower you throw for someone else or for your own. Making something a requirement for a shower is generally frowned upon (ex. books, diaper raffle, etc). I refer you to the BSB board if you need further reference.

  • The giving tree. We cherish it because it's all my DS wanted to hear when he was hospitalized for a month when he was 3, now he reads it to me :)
  • @alexkylee‌ I'm not throwing the shower tomorrow. I would also never through my own shower. Personally, I find that tacky. I never mentioned it was a requirement either. For the shower tomorrow it was just a suggestion. An awesome suggestion if I do say so myself. Cards usually get tossed but most people hold on to books for a lifetime.
  • Lots of good suggestions up there! Also Beatrix Potter! Peter rabbit books were one of our faves growing up
  • For babies I LOVE the indestructibles brand of books. They are illustrated beautifully and can't be ruined!!

Damn, calm yourself. Please re-read my comment. I did not say you would throw your own shower (which I agree is tacky). It was suggestion if you ever host a shower or have ideas for someone throwing one for you. I also said I was glad you liked the idea because some people don't. And a mere "suggestion" on an invite is tacky.

  • Any Mo Willems or Sandra Boynton books... Llama Llama Red Pajama is great (as well as the spin-offs).  They have really great indestructible books for babies that cannot be ripped or chewed up- I usually find them at children's book stores.  My little guy is obsessed with the Jane Yolen/Mark Teague books about dinosaurs- "How do Dinosaurs say good night?", "How do Dinosaurs Love Their Dogs?", "How do Dinosaurs Eat Their Food", etc.

  • @alexkylee‌ didn't mean to get you all riled up. Your comment just seemed a bit stuck up but it's very hard to tell tone from a post. I guess we will have to agree to disagree though. A suggestion is not tacky. It was done and worded beautifully (invitation created by me) and if I ever host a shower I'd do it too. Maybe I'll even list it as card on my Etsy shop which is www.etsy.com/shop/ApplesAndElephants ;)
