High-Risk Pregnancy

Bicornate Uterus / hCG Complications

Hey Ladies,

I'm 44 years old, and am 7.5 weeks pregnant. I have a bicornate uterus (although, I actually believe that its Septate-but that's another forum discussion) and my hCG numbers always start out pretty high (45,000) and then taper off. Not doubling very 72 hours or 96 hours, but definitely going up. My current OB was sure I was miscarrying because the numbers won't grow faster than a few thousand at a time but I still have a healthy heartbeat. I'm curious if I have vanishing twin or if its uterus related. Anyone ever have anything similar going on?

  • I have a didelphic uterus, and have never heard of this being a "normal" thing for ladies with our type of anomalies. As long as there's a heart beat, I wouldn't give up hope.
  • I have a bicornuate uterus as well. Last pregnancy, they never checked my hcg numbers, but they did do an ultrasound at 6 weeks bc I had light spotting--which is when they found that I have a BU with a complete split. I had everything possible happen to me that's at increased risk for a BU--breech baby, incompetent cervix, preterm labor, and placental abruption--although the doctors said women with a BU usually don't have many complications. Anyway, this pg, I had major bleeding at 7 weeks, like clots and clumps for about 4 days. I was sure I was having a miscarriage, so I had the hcg levels taken. It was 40,000 on Monday and 45,000 on Wednesday, so the nurse said I should come in and have an ultrasound. I went in fully expecting for them to tell me whether everything had passed, and instead, they started telling me about the heartbeat. They said there was a second, empty sac, and that could've been a twin, but we'll never know. Here I am today, 28+ weeks pregnant and truly hoping I make it well beyond when I had my daughter. Like pp said, I don't think it's uterine related, but who knows.
  • I also have a bicornuate uterus, however my OB never regularly checked my hcg levels, even after a previous miscarriage, so i don't know what's normal as far as hcg numbers go. But wanted to wish you good luck!
