Limbs falling asleep at night

Every night for the past couple of weeks I wake up to one of my arms/hands completely asleep. Has anyone else experienced this? I am about 11 weeks.

Re: Limbs falling asleep at night

  • Hi I'm 15 weeks and have had the same problem for a few weeks now-only my arms not legs. the uncomfortable numb heavy feeling actually wakes me up a few times at night rather annoying :/

  • I know some people develop carpal tunnel during pregnancy. I had it really bad in both hands and had surgery for it last year. It is really annoying, if it gets bad, they sell wrist bands at most pharmacies that will help.

  • I had this happen around 10/11 weeks as well. I started sleeping with my huge body pillow and it hasn't happened since.
  • Yup. It's annoying, but not as much as the getting up to go to the bathroom.

  • Yup pretty much every morning it's pretty annoying

This. I have the same thing and someone in the symptoms thread gave me this advice a few weeks back. I double checked it with my OB. He said it usually gets worse as the pregnancy progresses, like with extreme swelling and such, but it can also stay mild. It's supposed to clear up after giving birth.

Freckles- did yours get progressively worse? And did it ever happen before you were pregnant? Thanks!

I bought wrist braces at Amazon that are amazing and really the only thing letting me sleep at night anymore, started with one thumb and is now the first three fingers and thumb of both hands.

Try the braces at night and either soaking in cool water or ice packs occasionally to reduce the swelling in your writsts.

  • I had a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome during my last pregnancy. It got progressively worse. The wrist braces helped, but some nights I would have to get up and walk around for 30 minutes to stop the throbbing. I ended up getting cortisone injections. In most cases it resolves after delivery, but mine did not. The orthopedist said I was pre-disposed to carpal tunnel and the pregnancy just precipitated it early. I had surgery on both wrists prior to this pregnancy. The surgeries seemed to completely resolve the issue at the time, but I am waking up with numbness again this pregnancy. It's annoying, but not the end of the world. It will be back to sleeping in wrist braces for me soon.
  • Never before I was pregnant and it was pretty much the same all pregnancy. It didn't happen again until I got pregnant again. It is normal with changes in blood flow etc.
  • Thanks! I'm not really worried about it, but some of the stories i hear from people can freak me out! It happened to me maybe 3 or 4 times a month before I was pregnant. It happens 2 or 3 times a night now for me most nights.

I had something somewhat similar but was actually diagnosed with De Quervain's tenosynovitis which is similar.  It hurt during pregnancy and it got unbearable after-I could not use my right hand and had to keep all my fingers together.  I got two rounds of cortisone shots and it's been fine.  I did not know this could be related to my hands falling asleep at night though-I will have to ask my Dr. about preventative measures.
