Why do I always have expensive taste

I ran into this problem with designing my DS' nursery 4 years ago, too.  I have a plan in mind.  I look all over for what I want and I finally find it, but it's from the most expensive boutique.

First world problem...I know.  For my son I ended up buying the fabric and having a friend make curtains and a bed skirt.  I think in the end I spent just as much as I would have if I had bought from the boutique.  Gah.

  • Exactly @gradschoolmom1234 .  And, it seems like a big part of it is because I like particular color combinations.  4 years ago I wanted a lot of gray-like a gray bedskirt.  No one was doing that yet except one company that was too expensive.  Now there's tons of it out there.  Grrrr.

Have you checked out this company?  Carousel Designs?  They allow you to basically design and customize whatever you want with their gorgeous fabrics.  For a price...of course.

Ahhh that is a cute website! Why oh why are you giving me more adorable places to shop? My husband recently made a deal with me that I can't buy any more stuff until after our showers, but after that if we need anything else, he won't argue with whatever I pick. It's torture, that means I have to wait until mid november to do more shopping!
    I am sorry!

  • I have expensive taste and a cheap wallet lol, I nearly shat myself at babies r us yesterday when I saw prices for the bedding...
  • I start out with expensive tastes then end up changing my mind when I see the price. I will then usually decide to make it myself, and it usually works out.
I have an issue with paying full price for anything. It drives my husband insane.

My son wanted a loft bed, but they're freaking expensive. So, I found plans went to Home Depot and built one for $60 instead of $500. I am a chronic cheapie!

I used Carousel for DD'S room. Expensive as eff but great quality!

I also have the same problem. I pinned an outfit on pinterest the other day, then clicked the pic to see how much the top was... $895. I had a good old chuckle at myself.

Eta:re Carousel, I got tunnel vision and NEEDED a specific shade if coral! Oh pregnancy hormones.

  • I have the same problem and am trying to see if I can buy some less expensive stuff, so I can buy a few expensive things.  For instance, I bought the crib off Craigslist and am getting a free dresser from my parents house.  My dad is going to repaint both of them to match the nursery.  The expensive piece I'm probably going to buy is the glider/rocker.  Can't seem to find one that I like for less than $800 (and most are closer to $1000).  I've been looking on Craigslist, but not many come up. Think I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and pay the ridiculous price.

  • @gradschoolmom1234 - Thanks for the tip!  Unfortunately, I live in Canada and we don't really have too many outlet malls :(.  That's part of the problem.  I can find lots of gliders on-line that are more affordable, but they won't ship to Canada!  Also, I am short, so I'd like to try them to see if I can still rock/glide while sitting. (Don't have room for an ottoman).

  • I totally feel your pain. I found a light fixture I want so bad...it is $2500.

  • @brookey79‌ have you looked at Costco? I feel like I saw a glider there not too long ago for like $300(ish). As a fellow Canadian, I feel your pain on the overpriced furniture and the lack of shipping up here.

  • @bluebird00‌ I wanted a similar bookshelf... See attached. Even for hubs to make it the way I wanted it was wayyyy too expensive.
  • I always joke with my husband and call this "champagne taste on an Arbor Mist budget" ;)

I have expensive taste too.. but Im a good shopper. Coupons, sales and comparison shopping. I usually manage to find great deals on similar items I originally fell in love with!

  • I have expensive taste when it comes to very select baby items like cloth diapers, carriers and other crunchy/natural baby gear. But that's it.

We're using my childhood set of dressers for LO, my mom's rocker from when I was little, and my DH's family bassinet. Thank heavens for family - all it's going to cost us is a van rental to get it here. All we had to buy was the crib, which I got for <200 from Target. Means I get to spend a little on decor :) and I like furniture with a story, makes me cheesy. My parents actually did keep my crib too, but it's a drop-side so we can't use it :(

What I really want, though, is that $1000+ gray glider from Land of Nod. Seriously the most comfortable thing I've ever sat in in my entire life.

I found 2 brands new WC Tulas in a thrift store. I paid $2 for them, They still have the inspection stickers on them.
I sold one for almost five hundred, & I sold the second one for retail which was about 300, because I was feeling nice.
