February 2015 Moms

Any moms in the Northern California Area?

Hello!

I live in Vacaville, Solano County.  I'm from the other side of the country so I do not have much in the way of a female support network here. Recently an aquaintance battling post partum depression confided with me that her biggest regret in parenting is that she made no effort to join a local mommy group.  She said she felt like it was too late to bond into a group now that her first child is 2 and looking back she could really see how important a group would have been for her sheer sanity.

I understand that many hospitals offer programs where they assign you into a local mommy group and make it easy to network.  I was an OB coordinator at my current (military) hospital and I can assure you that is not offered here.

How do you find a mommy group in your local area?  Online is great...but I think an actually group would be better.

Is anyone interested in starting a local Feb 2015 mommy group?

If you have an insight on starting a local group (maybe you've joined on of your own), please share!

I'm a FMT and I really have no experience with mommy group joining/start up but I'm sure it could be beneficial.  I would imagine a few of us would just meet up at the mall once a month.  How hard could it be?

  • I'm pretty darn southwest of you, in Monterey. But I definitely think you should find a group. Stroller striders, MOPS, are good groups to look into. Also check with your parks and rec dept or adult school. I think groups often form on craigslist also. Though of course, you might be finding a group of chain saw murders or nudists on craigslist.

  • There are local groups here on the bump too. The Feb15 women are great and it's a very supportive board.
  • I'm Central Coast, so not close. But, our hospital had a weekly breast feeding support group that seemed like a great place to meet other moms or maybe learn about other mom groups. Perhaps reach out to the local hospitals and see if anyone offers anything like that.

I should point out, it was a "breast feeding" support class, but I don't think all of the moms EBF, so don't feel intimidated by that...

  • I'm in the east bay, so still pretty far south of you, but sort of in the neighborhood. If I hear of anything in your area, I will let you know :)

  • I'm in the east bay as well!
  • Check out meetup.com - They have a lot of mom groups where I am (I'm West Coast too). I have a moms group that I'm at part of at my church and through a local organization. MOPs is a big one too.

Moms international is another that my friends have had success in - I think they have a lot of locations all over.

Like you mentioned, a few friends have met their mom friends during a hospital support group (breastfeeding, I think?).

  • Thanks for all of the suggestions. I've never used Meetup.com before.  I see several local group options there! I'm sure I'll be able to find something that works for me. A few of note are "Fitmoms" and a local chapter of momsclub.org.  I really think I would like fitmoms!
  • I'm in Sonoma County, about an hour away from you in the off chance there is no traffic! Meet up is a great resource, if you Facebook check that out too. Whether you are religious or not I'm sure a local church/synagogue could have some resources as well as a community center.
  • I'm also in the East Bay!

  • I'm in Southern California. But you are always welcome to lean on the F15 group for support. Throughout your pregnancy as well as after! We might not all be able to hang out in real life, but it's close enough! Welcome to the group if you decide to stick around!
