2 yr old regressed from using the potty

I have a 2 1/2 year old boy and I'm pregnant with baby boy #2 due in November. My son was doing great using the potty with a few accidents here and there but about a month ago he totally regressed. I went out and bought pull ups and training undies; which he was excited about but now refuses to let us know when he has to go and will not try to go #2 at all in the toilet. We have tried both on the big potty and the kiddie potty; both ro no avail! I try my hardest to NOT come down on him for going in his pants but I would really like it if we could get him mostly trained by the time the baby arrives. Has any of the other mommies had this happen and how did you deal?

Re: 2 yr old regressed from using the potty

  • I potty trained my son when he was about 26 months when my other Lo was 2 months old. He did great potty training the long weekend we did it but when he went to daycare he had a few accidents and they put him in pullups. Since then he went straight down hill. Refused to go on the potty, stopped telling us when he was wet or pooped as if he didn't care to sit in it anymore. I didn't want to force it so I let him stay in pullups for 3 more months. This weekend I decided enough was enough of the pullups and potty trained again. No more pullups straight to underwear. Going cold turkey all weekend he has done great. One accident at daycare the first day back and zero since. So seriously I think it's the pullups. I hate pull ups. I don't think a child should be punished for going in the pullup but when your ready to really train again just toss away the pullups and find a good weekend outdoors to let him be naked or in underwear so he can honestly poop and pee and see how icky it feels. I swear it worked. Good luck! Nothing worse then changing two diapers. Then again I didn't do it when I was pregnant because I was too worn out to keep bending over cleaning up messes etc.

  • I'm with others and confused what the pull-up is for.  We put DD in pull-ups at bedtime but once we decided to start she wore underwear during the day and that's it.  Did you buy him regular underwear?  I would let him pick a pair that he likes.

Also, don't be surprised if he regresses a bit after the baby comes.
  • Yeah, my DC doesn't allow pull ups or trainers with waterproof lining when potty training.
  • What are training undies?

We didn't potty train, he "trained" himself, but when he started waking at night to pee we bought pull ups because they were easier to get on and off at night.  Big Mistake.  He loved the idea of pull ups because they were like underwear, but he could pee in them!  He only wanted to wear them.  So we let him.  After a week he was ready to be back in underwear again.

I also wouldn't put a deadline on him or yourself. It's only going to stress both of you out.  I get not wanting to deal with 2 in diapers, but really it's just unnecessary pressure for you and him.

  • It sounds like maybe your DS is trying to exert some independence?  He figured out that going potty is something only he can control, so he's testing the boundaries with it?  I wouldn't personally go back to diapers.  I would consider this a small phase.  Keep him in underwear and keep encouraging the potty.
