Toddler troubles

Our 14 month old has been waking herself up with a poop. From every nap. For two weeks. At first I thought it was a coincidence, but she barely squeezes anything out - just a little marble, enough to say "booped" and point to her diaper. Then she wants to get up.

Is this a thing? I'm 90% sure she's manipulating me. She's not constipated, she has a regular-sized poop at least once a day. This seems forced... I knew there would be a day that my daughter would manipulate me. I didn't know it would be so soon, or so unpleasant-smelling...

Re: Toddler troubles

  • If she associates pooping with getting up from her nap like she wants then it seems possible. DS would take his diaper off when he wanted up because the first few times we let that work. He was very upset when he had fall asleep for nap naked. I snuck up and put a diaper on him after he was out.

I'm not saying leave her in a poop diaper because that would be bad but if you lay her back down afterwards she might better understand that poop doesn't mean getting out of nap time.

  • Long shot - but maybe it's her own way of telling you she's ready to start potty training? Poop before the nap, maybe.

14 months is REALLY early to start potty training. We had bouts of poops during nap time, but they were usually big messy ones that I equated to teething.

It kind of does sound like she knows what she's doing. Can you push back nap and see if she still does it?

  • We have been pushing the nap back, but she still needs two at this point or we get psycho-baby by 5. She's so funny but drives me crazy :) When she says "boop," it's the most serious face!

Some kids are ready at 12 months. When they're ready, they're ready.
She's obviously recognizing what she's doing and controlling it to some extent, that's a big PT readiness sign.

  • I'm with @jennhillhoite‌ If she wakes up "boopy" :) clean her up and put her back to nap-- also, they have pretty neat "sleep time" clocks for kids. Not exactly sure how they work. But the concept is that when the light is blue it is nap time when it is yellow it is up time. She may easily pick up on that :)

    Good luck

  • I can't remember exactly how old DD was when she started pooping mid-way through her nap which would wake her up and then she would NOT go back to sleep... I'm thinking 18-20ish months.  I started trying to push her nap back until after she pooped.  This worked for awhile but the nap pooping continued to be an issue and then she started taking off her poopy diaper which was a MESS!  I took this as a sign that she was ready to potty train and she definitely was.  I'd try having her poop on the potty pre-nap and see what happens.  Oh and pray she doesn't start removing her clothes if she does poop!  My kid has to wear footless zip PJs backwards to bed at night to prevent her from removing her clothes/diaper while sleeping... stinker!

Haha uuuugh that sounds gross. She knows how to take off the Velcro diapers, but the snaps are still too much for her. Fingers crossed that fine motor skill is still a while down the road....
