Fever while pregnant

I started feeling sick yesterday (sinus drainage that was giving me a sore throat) and at about 12:30am woke up with chills and low grade fever of 100.1. I asked my mom, who is a nurse, what to take and she said I could take Tylenol. I try to avoid any type of medicine so I just took one, and then another this morning. Called my OB office and the nurse said I can take Tylenol as directed on the box and not to worry unless my fever goes over 101. I've been worried that I should have just gone into see the doctor and make sure it's not the flu. I've been resting all day and drinking lots of water. So here's my question: when would you worry about a fever? How much Tylenol is too much? (I've only taken 4 total). I'm a worry wart so any advice will help. Thanks ladies.

Re: Fever while pregnant

  • Personally I let my fevers do their job and run their course unless it's passing an unsafe level.

  • I would say that the Tylenol as directed is safe otherwise we wouldn't be advised to take it. As far as the fever. I ran at about 99.5-100 degrees most of the pregnancy with my first. She was a very large healthy baby with no issues so if the fever isn't approaching 101 you are probably ok letting your body take care of it without meds. That being said if you are physically uncomfortable I would take the Tylenol.
  • Thank you! The only reason I ask is because my Drs office will be closed for the weekend (obviously) and I didn't know how long to wait before a fever warranted a trip to the ER, or how many days to take Tylenol. I'm just going to relax and hope it clears over night.
  • I wouldn't be afraid to take tylenol according to the directions on the bottle. Esp if that's what the doctor said also. Feel better soon!!
  • I just got over being sick for a couple of weeks.  My doctor said anything over 100.3 was bad for the baby and I should take regular strength Tylenol as advised on the label.  When my fever was over 100 I took it so that it did not get too high for baby.  I would definitely talk to your doctor :-)  I hope you feel better.  Being sick stinks!
