Resonable protein sources

I have SOMEWHAT of an appetite back after 15W of grueling morning sickness. My one big aversion is to meat-all meat!!! I am getting almost no protein! I am trying to eat hummus, peanut butter, and almond milk! I don't like nuts though! I looked on line and it recommended very weird things! Are there any normal suggestions on how to get more protein in my diet?

Re: Resonable protein sources

  • Look up vegetarian eating - a lot of vegetable protein, you have to combine with a grain to complete the amino.  Hummous and pita is my favourite.  Quinoa salad (with cukes, red peppers, and green onions - dressing just olive oil and lemon juice).  Bean salads.  Black beans and corn....

Those were my staples when I had meat aversions... and really, when I used to live on my own, I ate mostly vegetarian out of taste preference. (Plus vegetarian meals are easier to cook, haha)

  • This was a discussion a few days ago and there are some good ideas in here. Hopefully this helps because I just load up on beans and hummus when I can't eat meat. https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12431887/too-picky#latest

  • I was almost the same way! Add beans to your salad, like garbanzo or black. I found that if the chicken is hidden in a sauce or shredded in a sandwich or taco, with a bunch of other things, it was more palatable. I am week 18 and still a with the aversions to chicken. Good luck!
  • Can you do eggs?

  • What all the PP have said is great advice! Especially BEANS :)

I only have one thing to add--hard boiled eggs. I chop 'em up, season them, and add them to my salad. For some reason I find them amazingly tasty right now.

...you are well on your way to enjoying food again, good luck!

  • Just an fyi im not sure what type of almond milk you are getting; but, normal plain, old Almond milk doesn't have much protein. But they do have a protein added version now...

  • Also, protein bars/shakes can help. I track my protein and add a shake if I don't get what I need from regular food.

  • I've been a vegetarian for more than half of my life and I eat a lot of beans and cheese for protein. Mexican food is a must  in my house :)

  • I've been vegetarian for7 years, and still don't crave meat like everyone said I would. Haha! My midwife really wants me to eat 2 eggs a day... and I hate eggs. I've started making frittatas, breakfast burritos, "kitchen sink" scrambles, anything to hide them. I used to rely heavily on soy products for protein, but now I can't eat it without getting sick. I eat A LOT of cheese, beans, hummus and yogurt after my egg-y breakfast to make up protein intake. Good luck!! :)

  • I was the same way for a while.  I'm finally getting over my meat aversion!  I am pretty sure rice and beans eaten together are considered a complete protein (Chipotle is your best friend).  Eggs, especially if you keep the egg yolk around, are also an eggcellent (sorry, I had to) source of protein.  For snacks you can add things like yogurt, nuts, cheese...

Another for greek yogurt! I love that stuff. I'm loving Siggi's brand lately, which is like greek yogurt and has less added sugar. And eggs (yolks too) every day. My SIL makes a good baked egg in a muffin tin that she makes ahead of time.

  • Thanks for all the wonderful advice! I'm not into Greek yougert, but I can stomach one a day for the baby! :(
I do love eggs though, and I completely forgot they have protein!
  • I second the protein shake comment above.  You can get really creative with protein powders.  Whey is probably the best combo of tasty/cheap/easy to find if dairy doesn't bother you.  I like to mix it with plain greek yogurt and put it in the freezer for a little bit as a night time snack.

  • Leafy greens! I am pescetarian and try to stay away from dairy and powders. Spinach (I blend this into a smoothie every morning) is a great source of protein as is kale which I also blend, eat a salad out of or make kale chips. Now is a great time for chili as it starts to get cold-I just put in all the beans and lentils and if DH wants meat, he can put it in his. Be careful with powders as soy based powders aren't good for us ladies. Cucumbers have protein so if you get some hummus and dip cukes in it you have a double whammy. Cauliflower is good as well. (Can you tell I am super into plant based sources of protein??? Lol) hope that helps!!

Greek yogurt is great for protein! Nuts, pb, milk/soy, eggs, Carnation Instant Breakfast, and Fiber One protein bars are other things I turn to.
Then there'd always Tiger's Milk. Each one of those has 20g of protein.

OP, I'm with you on the meat thing.
