STM stupid question :playtime

DD2 is 7 weeks.  I can not remember at what age LO started to "play". What I mean is reaching for things, bringing toys to their mouth etc.  Right now, I put LO on a play mat or a bouncer and she sort of just sits there.  Am I crazy?

Thanks in advance.

Re: STM stupid question :playtime

  • Lol!! I just had a baby last year too and I can't remember.

I think it maybe about 3-4 months??? I get updates from the bump on babies weekly progress and what they may be doing at this time. It says that right now they will most likely be cooing right now. That's all I got .

    We have our "Irish Twins"

    DD born 8/7/2013

    DS born 7/28/14

  • MiniMe is 9 weeks, she seems to want to touch her hanging toys sometimes but her co-ordination means that when she does, it's luck more than skill. She's also perfectly happy staring at them and letting someone else touch them so she can see them move. She loathes tummy time though.

Probably around 3-4 months though, as PP said.

I like this thread, I was wondering that too. And what sort of activities are you guys doing with your blobs. Reading the baby whisperer book I'm supposed to be doing activities with baby, but she doesn't really say what (at least as far as I have gotten.) So I do tummy time with him, which doesn't last long because he either starts to fall asleep or get upset. I also do a really weird laying down hokey pokey with him. And then I make faces at him a lot. My repertoire is not exactly overflowing with enrichment it feels like, lol.

My LO is 6 weeks old. Currently we talk to her "friends" I've positioned at the edges of the changing table -- a panda rattle and some animal pictures. Then we go sit in the bouncer and she bats at her toy strip and/or I read her picture books and/or listen to music. Then two or three minutes of tummy time before she starts to cry. Then maybe a few more minutes in the bouncer before she starts yawning and fussing and I put her down for another nap. She seldom likes to be awake more than an hour or an hour fifteen at a time. Would love to hear other activity ideas, or ideas how to make tummy time more palatable.
  • @ADC1979‌ I just do tummy time with her basically. She's only six weeks and every time I take out one of her toys and show it to her she just kind of looks at me like um, what? I don't think she's there yet. But I've been playing a game with her the past few days where I stick out my tongue at her and try to get her to do it back. She seems to be picking up on it but it could just be a coincidence that she's sticking her tongue out too...

My 9 week old has been playing the tongue game recently too! So cute!

  • DS loves kicking his feet, so when I lay him on the play mat, I lay him so that when he kicks he will hit the parts holding up the toys and they'll move for him. We do tummy time, which at most lasts about 5 minutes right now (he's almost 8 weeks). I sing songs to him. He will look at the birds that hang from his bouncy chair. He's just noticed he has feet, so now when he's in his car seat he just stares at them, which is pretty entertaining. We sing songs to him and read books. I'm looking forward to when he's older, and "playing" will be longer than just 5 minutes before he's bored and done!

  • I remember around 4 months DD began to get more interested in life. "The 4 month wakeful" I believe people referred to it as. She suddenly was easier to distract from whatever was causing her to cry, and was more into grabbing toys.

  • We have a play mat for DD with a little piano attached for her to kick at.. it's adorable when she hits the keys but it's pure luck, lol. I will read some books to her, play the tongue game, we sing songs, tummy time usually turns into nap time - she is way more into working on holding her head up when shes pressed against my chest. She also loves talking to her rainforest and ocean musical crib soothers.

  • I do songs with hand motions (his favorite is "deep and wide"), let him lay on his back and watch/bat around whatever toy hangs above him (or the ceiling fan), tickle him and make faces. We also just discovered that if you blow in his face, he gasps and then giggles uncontrollably.
