Alertness

LO is now 5 days old. I'm producing a lot of milk, and I like to think it just knocks her out. We've been able to do tummy time once a day the past two days for maybe 2-3 minutes. But the visiting nurse just commented on her lack of grabbing reflex... But she was out cold, we had a huge feeding 2 hours before she came over. I've noticed the reflex before, but is any one else's baby not have much alert time during the day? I was fine until this nurse came over, now I'm nervous.

Re: Alertness

  • At only 5 days old, I would think alertness is just a nice thing to see (as long as LO isn't fussy). At that age, my LO slept 90% of the time & the rest of the time he was feeding. He didn't really "wake up" until 2.5 weeks or so. This is how I understand most newborns are. Personally, I wouldn't be worried at all.

  • Don't stress about it... she's only 5 days old!  My LO is almost 5 weeks, and some days she is alert most of the day, but others she is super sleepy (yesterday and today are completely different in terms of the amount of time sleeping and alert).  After a big feeding, they're very likely to fall asleep, so I have no idea why the nurse would make comments about her grabbing reflex.  My LO was so sleepy in her first few days, that the dog would bark right next to her and she wouldn't even startle.  They change a lot over the first few weeks, and she'll become more alert in the next week or two.

  • Thanks ladies! I feel better.
  • I had a super alert first child.  Believe me, this is not something you want.  :)  Your LO sounds perfectly normal to me!

  • My LO's grabbing reflex has become so much stronger than it was those first weeks, even when he was alert. Like everyone said, I wouldn't worry about it, I'm surprised she mentioned it.
  • FTM here, but this sounds normal. LO would grab our fingers starting from early on, but only this week has he started grabbing toys and other items (he's 6 weeks old)

  • Seems a bit early for your pediatrician to be concerned about that.
