Weaning from the pump at 1 year

Hi! My LO is just short of a year (the end of September), and now that school is back in session and I'm much busier at work, I'm planning on weaning from the pump during the day. Mostly because it's a hassle and I'm no longer pumping enough for her for the following day anyway. I was at 2 pumps a day but will be down to one starting next week. My question is, on weekends and my one day off during the week, do I need to pretend I'm at work and replace the feedings with a cup of BM and then I need to go pump that one time (for now until I've dropped that, probably in one more week or so), or can I still nurse without it making it painful for me the rest of the week trying to drop all day feeding when I'm not with her? Another concern of mine, is that dropping all day feedings will wipe out my supply completely (I've struggled with it the entire time), and I won't really be producing enough for her for the morning and bedtime feedings, which I would like to keep. I guess I'm just also upset about starting the weaning process, but it really will relieve me of a major stressor in my life (not with her, just the pump and not producing enough). Basically any words of wisdom, advice, or of encouragement would be appreciated. TIA!

  • congrats on making it to 1 year! it's SUCH a relief to stop pumping.

you don't need to pump on the weekends. i stopped pumping at work at 14 months and have always nursed DS on demand when i'm home on weekends/holidays. i have never had any issues with being engorged during the week. i think it does happen to some people, but generally it's not a problem since your supply is somewhat lessened after a year anyway.

i also would not worry about your supply dropping precipitously. your body will adjust. DS is now 24 months and we are still nursing. stop by the extended breastfeeding check-in for support in BFing past 1 year. :)

  • Wonderful, thank you! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. It's so nice to hear others' success stories, I will definitely be checking out the check-in :) And yes, I'm so excited to not even look at that dreaded pump for a while!
