Megan/Meghan

Is Meghan an accepted spelling? I read somewhere it's gaelic, but I'm getting conflicting info.

Thoughts? Paging @Bromios? :)
Started adoption process in Jan. 2011.
3 failed matches in 2012.
Surprise pregnancy in Aug. 2012.
Precious baby boy "HC" born May 2013.
Began researching EA in 2014.
No longer pursuing EA due to fibroid complications.
Officially on the adoption home study wait list.

    I have also heard that Megan is a variant of Margaret, like so many many names.

    I'm not recommending this spelling, but I do know that Maegen meant "strength" in old English. And that's pretty cool :)

    I've always seen Meghan as an accepted spelling. I've known plenty of girls and women who have spelled it this way.

    Is there any spelling of this that is pronounced mee-gehn? One day grandma called to say that aunt had named her baby meegan. Found out later it was the normal pronunciation, but I can see people pronouncing Meagen that way.

    I've known a lot of Meghans.  Honestly though, when I see a name with an added h, I'm really tempted to pronunciate the H.  I guess it's just nms

    I grew up with a Meghan who pronounced it Meegan.  People mispronounced it ALL the time.

    I went to school with a Meigan.  She pronounced it like Megan.

    Both are acceptable but IMO it's better to spell it the way 95% of the people are going to spell it. Why subject her to a lifetime of spelling out her name but not the fun of getting an unusual name?

    My cousin spells it Meaghan.  I think Megan is the most understood/spelled way in the general population.

    One of our friends is Meghan. I personally like the spelling a lot.

    I am a Meagan and often have my name misspelled as Megan and sometimes as Meghan. To me, the h is unnecessary.
    I've only ever been seriously called Mee-gan one time in my 26 years but DH calls me that sometimes to irritate me.
    Of course I think Megan is a beautiful choice :)

    The majority of women I know with this name spell it Meghan so that looks most normal to me.

    I'm a bit late to the show apparently :)
    It is most certainly Welsh (so Celtic not Gaelic) and does come from Margaret.
    The only time I have seen it spelt with a 'h' has been with people from the US so I think you can count that as people trying to make it look more 'celtic' than they think the actual spelling looks. 
    It is Megan - it is very popular here

    Here is some input from a Meghan (with an H)! So I may be biased. I like the spelling. - I haven't had anyone try to  prounounce it "mee-gan" except when I was really young. I was born in the early 70's before Megan became more widely known in the 80s. So I do remember a few teachers mis-pronouncing when I was little. But not since.  My mom was Margaret, and yes, Meghan is technically the welsh diminutive. But I think a lot of Irish-American girls have the name Megan, so people think it's Irish.

    Typically when people have to spell my name, they say "megan with an h? or without?" This makes me think that both spellings are common enough that there won't be much confusion.  I would stay away from the creative spellings with extra vowels or like "Megyn Kelly" from Fox News.

    Me:38 - TTC for 3+years - Multiple failed IUIs (w/clomid, femara,injectibles - all BFNs) IVF #1 - Jan 2012, CP -IVF#2 March 2012, CP - Went back to IUIs all summer. Multi-Cycle Egg banking for FET. Egg retrieval #1 October, 2 frosties. Retrieval#2 January 2013. 6 eggs banked - waiting to be fertilized in March, FET March! Zero eggs survived thaw process - FET Cancelled. New RE - Now banking Embryos for PGS - July ER- 3 eggs retrieved, 3 fertilized, 1 genetically normal embryo! FET - Feb. 2014, BFP - Mar. 2014, EDD 11/6/14 It's a GIRL!
