Not 3T related: Buying couches

We have only been married 2 years, and all of our stuff is hand me downs so we've never really bought furniture before! What kinds of things do you guys look for in a solid set? It seems any pieces with reputations for lasting a long time are $10k and up... which we were trying to save up for, but with IF eating away at our "fun" savings, I don't think that's realistic. We were looking at Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams (too expensive for us), after hearing wonderful things about their construction. Have you guys had any luck with some brands that are more reasonable price wise, but still have the quality? What brands do you like or have heard good things about? Also, what do you think about leather vs. fabric for a house with pets?

  • We are actually in the process of buying one right now!  Jensen Lewis and Room and Board are both good reputable stores.  We liked Jensen Lewis better because they had more selection for quality sleeper sofas (which we need).  They mostly sell American Leather couches (theyre not all leather, it's just the brand name) and they are supposed to be pretty good quality.  I think prices are about 2500-5000 depending on size/customizations.

I remember reading some good stuff about American Leather! I don't think my area has those 2 retailers, but I'm pretty sure I saw some local stores carrying that brand. Thanks for the tip!
  • Raymour and Flannigan is a pretty reputable option also.

And yes, I want an amazing new comfy couch to lay on when I'm pregnant or breastfeeding or up all night with a baby.  Nothing would make me happier than having a child to ruin this couch.

I can second Room and Board. We have a couch from there that has been really holding up to the abuse we put it through. GL

  • Whatever you do, do not buy Ashley. We have a kitchen table and chairs from them. I think its about a year old now and I'd like to take it out back to the burn pile!

I do like our Southern Motion reclining couch. They called it bonded leather. Which I think is just a fancy word for fake! But it is great with the dog hair.

  • I'd like to hear some responses.  We've been living together/married for 9 years and we still have crappy, hand-me-down, or Craigslist furniture.  I want brand new, gorgeous, no-one-ever-sat-on-it-shit.  I mean, our current stuff is OK, but it's getting old.  And gross.

Around here it seems Raymour and Flannigan is the good choice.  I'm about to finance some shit, what's more debt anyway right??  Although here is something to think about ladies........Say you get pregnant, have a baby, do you really want brand new furniture?  I said this 3 years ago thinking I'd have one by now.  I wish I had bought a new living room suit then.  Never a right time for the right furniture....

I definitely posted and then slept last night.. Party over here! ;)

Buttmonkey I hear you! I even have DH ready to finance some new furniture.. It really seems there's not a good time to buy new furniture! This was my counter argument when the thought of kiddos and new furniture came to mind: leather for an easy clean up; and my couch is NASTY like, hand me down of a hand me down, my MIL's dog peed all over it when we babysat it. So, do I really want to lay my hypothetical baby on said couch? ;) I'm really rallying for new stuff

That's my thought too- I had a mini fit when I was cramping from stims and on the couch last night.. I want a comfy, non-smelly couch!!!!!!
  • We bought a huge sectional from Raymour and Flanagan a couple years ago. Bought the floor model so it was cheaper, and got leather. Its a little big for the family room, but DH and I can recline with space and the dogs have room too. Yes, the leather has worn a little bit from the dogs, but it does not hold the dog smell like fabric does. We've bought cheap sofa/recliners before, this one has held up well! I would recommend R&F to a friend!

We are seriously considering buying a floor model, no matter where we but from. The discounts are so good. Only thing is the leather floor models are harder to come by! Leather is on our wish list for the smell factor, for sure!!!

I was wondering about the bonded leather or the leather blends! My SIL has a bonded leather and it really seems to do the trick. Thanks for the tip about Ashley. DH's boss's wife actually recommended them... She furnished their entire lake house with it and invited employees over for a day. I was wondering how well the stuff would stand up, it was the first time she had bought things from Ashley and she literally bought every piece from them.. Risky!!!
