It was briefly discussed in Randoms, but I didn't want it to get lost.
We had a front yard temper tantrum yesterday, and cut a few things back. All the way back. As in dead. We just bought the house last year and the beds were over planted, and over grown. Mostly stuff we hated anyway. Any ideas/tips on what we can plant now?
Where is the surprise HGTV show when you need it? I forgot to mention we have some sort of evil grub the birds love. This is my new front lawn. Nice, isn't it?
Note the weeds, dead tree in hedge, and questionable power line situation. Also, in case you didn't notice, NO GRASS. HALP!
Are you looking for things to plant that will come up next year, or things to plant that will be flowering now?
Things that will look ok now. We're renting our house out Nov 1 so we can go on vacation. Shrubs maybe? We're also thinking of putting up window boxes, as our windows look weird and squinty. My moms neighbour always puts holiday inspired decor in hers and I love it.
I think I'll probably plant some bulbs while I'm at it though.
Your can treat for the grubs now, but will have to again in May/June when the larvae hatch. We finally got rid of ours after treating for a year.
Fall is a great time to plant shrubs and trees. I just put a crepe myrtle in and it bloomed. Butterfly bushes bloom all summer long. Montauk daisy bushes bloom in the fall.
Is that an aborvitae hedge line? You can get a replacement in the same height for cheap. Grass seed should be sown in cool weather as well.
@LaurLaurLaur Do you know how to treat for grubs? We were going to hire a profession firm to take care of our front yard, but the quote was outrageous. They were planning on removing 18 inches of topsoil!
I am sad-DH let our 'garden' grow grass. We didn't plant this year (because baby-and he won't help me take care of the garden). He now mows it. I will have to take a picture of our front yard in the morning. I want to redo some of it so bad, but not sure where to start!

We did a lot of work today. What kept me going was the idea of posting my 'after' pic for all of you.
We've got a pretty low budget for fall decorations this year, although I have Halloween covered. I'm going to put some reddish mums in my black pedants planters, and we're getting a new welcome mat. We just got a pretty new outside lamp that's black iron. Next month I'll add 3 pumpkins (daddy, mama, baby). Any other suggestions for on the cheap?
Re: Fall Gardening
Our fall gardening must have begun already since DH is no longer watering our flowerbeds. Soon I will have dead daisies and begonias.
Are there any other "fall" plants besides Mums I could put in my pots?
