Costco

Does anyone have a Costco membership? I'm wondering what they have and maybe how it relates/is different to a Sam's Club. There is a Costco about 1.25 hours away...I travel that way for work often and I hear so many good things I'm wondering if it would be worth it to get a membership and stop while I'm down that way.

Re: Costco

  • That is going to depend on specials that Sam's runs - I believe the prices for both diapers and formula are very similar - but what I would do is call and ask your Sam's if they have a regular special coupon on Huggies/Pampers/store-brand diapers, and how much of a discount it is. Costco runs a special approximately every 45 days for a $6 off coupon on either Huggies Snug & Dry (the basic no frills Huggies) or the Kirkland store brand diapers (which are almost identical to Huggies "supreme" Little Movers line), which usually averages out to around 15 cents per diaper - if Sam's has a similar special, it might not be worth swapping. I'm not sure about formula specials because the formula (and food and toiletries) in our area are all far cheaper at Walmart and the Costco is about a half hour further away, so I only really use the Costco for diapers.

  • Costco should give you a free day pass if you ask to check it out. They used to.
  • Also see if google shopping express delivers in your area. If you have a Costo membership they will deliver costco stuff same day and it's free for the first 6 months.

  • We have a costco membership but there isn't a Sam's nearby.

We use it mainly for paper products and cleaning supplies. Also their organic strawberry jam, fig bars, and a couple other items. I'm not a fan of their produce bc they have basically zero organic selection.

We get diapers through amazon prime and don't do formula. Their wipes are fairly cheap but they gave the twins diaper rash so we stopped using them.

They'll have vitamins and toiletries that well get occasionally like toothpaste and deodorant.

They are hit or miss on kid's clothing and other non-food stuff.

  • I have to go down in about 2 weeks for work so I will stop by and see if they have a day pass to check it out. We have a Sam's here and my husband is on his step-dad's business account and will buy paper products there. It sounds like maybe there isn't much of a difference in what they offer.
  • We have both
    Good things at both
    Costco has a better clientele
    Would choose costco..nicer

Have any of you tried any subscription services for things like diapers? I know Target is doing it now and know some people are using Amazon. Do you think or is worth the convenience? My Costco is just 10 minutes away, but DH hates the crowds there, and thinks we won't ultimately save on diapers if that's one of the only things we need from there.
  • I have done diaper subscriptions through diapers.com and amazon.com. I would definitely do them again.

I'm not sure if amazon has changed things but when they did the 2 day free shipping it was great and then somewhere along the way it was changed to standard delivery and it took about 10 working days to receive the shipment. I was having to order every 2 weeks to ensure I had diapers due the delivery time and usually ended up running out before the shipment arrived. I got frustrated with it and discontinued it. That was around 2011 so I'm not sure what is offered now with the amazon mom subscriptions. I also have prime now which I didn't before so I don't know how that affects shipping either.

After that, I went to diapers.com. They use to have a discount program where you got $5 off for each box of diapers and then free 2 day shipping but they changed that program in 2012 I think. After that I just went to buying diapers at the grocery stores.

I haven't tried the Target one but I know that your price fluctuates with the market price, so you might pay more for diapers one month than you do another month - if that makes sense. Basically, whatever the price of the diapers are on that day that your order is placed is what you are charged. If you have the red card, you get an extra 5% off and free shipping. I only know this because me and a cashier had this conversation about their program a few weeks ago when she was trying to get me to sign up.

  • We've used an amazon prime subscription for diapers since my oldest was born in 2010. Zero complaints. H actually manages it all, which makes it even better, haha.

  • If you have amazon prime you can add amazon mom for no extra charge. It gives you an additional discount in wipes and diapers and had the 2 day shipping.
  • Costco is like a higher quality Sam's Club. I have memberships to both. I'd get rid of the Sam's membership if Costco was local.

  • We love costco! We use their diapers and wipes they are great. Food and other products we always go for Kirkland brand and I've never been disappointed.
Warning No formatter is installed for the format bbhtml
  • The diapers at our costco are less expensive than the diapers on the subscribe and save thing from amazon mom. That being said, I love amazon.

  • you can also order online with Costco and most shipping (maybe all) is free.  When I switched from Similac to the Kirkland formula I was saving $40 each order (package of 3 and larger quantity than Similac).  That alone made the membership worthwhile.
