dairy free support

I'm guessing I'm not the only one who's LO is upset by dairy. I've been down this road before, but its really my least favorite part about nursing. I had hoped to skip this with number three, but no such luck.

It's really the cheese that I miss when doing this. There are no good substitutes. The chocolate withdrawal isn't fun either, but on a daily basis it's the cheese.

I thought maybe we could share dairy free recipes and what we're substituting. Last time I only had one child so I made some things from scratch like pudding and alfredo sauce to be able to enjoy them without dairy. I don't see me having that kind of time this time around.

Re: dairy free support

  • I'm dairy free my choice (vegan) so I may be able to help. My favorite cheese substitute is the Daiya brand if you don't have time to make a nut or soy cheese substitute. The website FindingVegan.com is a great recipe resource. Dark chocolate can be dairy free as well if you're craving chocolate. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's have awesome dairy free substitutes. I recommend TJ's cream cheese!

  • So far I've avoided the need to do the special diet for LO but I had to do it with DS as he was allergic to milk protiens (had bloody stools at a month old) i couldn't do it since I only had a hand pump and dried up by the end of the week :/

  • I was dairy free w DS1 and am hoping to avoid it w DS2 (he's only 2w though and at this point DS1 had no signs of an intolerance yet).

For me the easiest thing to do was not try to substitute foods (ie- trying cheese substitutes just made me miss the real thing. I LOVE cheese! Chocolate too). I ate avocado on sandwiches and as a chili topping because it gave me that creamy satisfaction.

Here is a ranch dressing recipe I loved and still prefer over regular ranch:

I also love this avocado pasta sauce:

  • I am having to cut dairy as well but as I'm slightly lactose intolerant I have done it before. I love baking and found the best way to make dairy free frosting is by using Tofutti cream cheese. I also use that brand for sour cream. I love yogurt but can't stand any of the substitutes and I kind of agree with PP. Sometimes it's easier not to substitute. Here is a link to my blog where I have some dairy free recipes, mostly under the year 2011. https://sarahlovestobake.blogspot.com
