Trouble TTC

Intro post Hi, everyone!

Howdy!  I've lurked around several different boards on this site over the last and I'm finally ready to jump into the conversations  =)  My DH and I are both 30 and have been TTC for a little over a year now.  I have a 6 year old step son but no biological babies of my own.  When I stopped taking my BCP my body went absolutely crazy and I gained like 50 pounds that I haven't been able to lose. Needless to say, my ego has taken quite a hit because I've always been slim and am now pushing the obese mark. I finally buckled down and went to the ob/gyn a couple weeks ago and have officially been diagnosed with PCOS.

I self-diagnosed myself with it months ago because of the aforementioned weight gain, increased peach fuzz on my face, crazy acne (I'm 30 for crying out loud!) and random cycles. I'm also already starting to show some insulin resistance. You'd think it wouldn't have been a big deal to hear the actual diagnosis from a doctor because I knew it was coming but even still I wasn't ready for it.  Already on the board I've seen many people with PCOS so I'm definitely welcoming the opportunity to give and get support!

Me: 30, DH: 30

Married since December 17, 2011

2004: Began taking BCP
7/2013: Off BCP, TTC
7/2014 - now: Irregular cycles, entirely too many BFNs
8/2014: Bloodwork and PCOS diagnosis from OB
Now: Lifestyle changes and finding RE
10/2014: VERY unexpected BFP!!!

  • Welcome! Glad you have a clear explanation for those frustrating symptoms, but I'm sorry that it's been hard news to hear.

Listen to @iputketchuponketchup! We need to do a double blind research study or something but I will go out on a limb and say that women who run far from the Clomid Candy Man (nice phrase, Ketchup) and into the arms of an RE get pregnant at least 82% more successfully. :D

  • Welcome to the board...I have no advice to add to the excellent words of wisdom you've already received so I will just say hello and wish you luck!

**But seriously, it was excellent advice and you should definitely heed it.  An OBGYN will just waste your time...it is time to find an RE that can give you a real treatment plan.  Shit, I guess I added advice anyway.

  • Welcome, but I am sorry you find yourself here.  I completely understand about how the actual diagnosis can sting, PCOS is my primary dx right now too.

Definitely take the advice from the other ladies to heart and seek out an RE.  I used my PCP for general OB stuff so when I started having issues just bypassed that altogether and went straight to an RE.  It probably saved me a ton of time, even though it doesn't feel like it right now...

    Good luck!

  • Thanks for the advice! As you correctly predicted, the OB did mention Clomid! I told her I didn't want to just take a pill and hope for the best so the next advice was "eat healthy and lose weight." Thanks, doc. I couldn't have figured that part out on my own.  I'll definitely start looking for RE!

And check out the "getting healthy" post! Thanks, ladies!

  • Another PCOSer here.  Welcome.  You've definitely come to the right place.

I'm sorry your ob/gyn wasn't helpful. Definitely get to an RE asap. They deal with this stuff every day, whereas the ob/gyn deals with already pregnant ladies everyday.  Lots of testing, but they'll be able to get a picture of exactly where your hormones are out of balance, get you on a management plan to help TTC and probably suggest BCPs when you're not TTC (to keep your androgens in balance - which will help you lose that weight).

    Good luck!!

    Me: 28  MH:35

  • Hi! Welcome :) I have PCOS and recently joined this board. My OBGYN initially mentioned clomid. I came on here and told these lovely ladies and they told me the exact same info they're telling you: have DH get a SA, do CD3 BW, get a HSG. To get to the point I had another OBGYN appt yesterday and she also told me all of this was needed before she would do Clomid. In addition to referring me to a RE. I had my CD3 BW today and my HSG is scheduled for Monday. So thankful for these ladies. You'll feel so at home here :)
