Roomba - yay or nay?

I'd love to have a Roomba but they are so darn expensive. Are they worth the $$??  Are there any good, cheaper alternatives out there?

I've got a german shepherd at home who is the cause of my desire for an auto-vacuum thingie. If I don't sweep and vacuum EVERY weekend (and sometimes more) we have, literally, tumbleweeds of doghair blowing around the house. so gross. dh laid lo on the carpet this morning and his onesie was so covered in dog hair we had to change him. awful hair. just awful. we have a mix of hardwood, laminate, and carpet.

  • oh for those of you not familiar with the Roomba: https://store.irobot.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2501652&s=A-ProductAge&gclid=CLa-8ff1tsACFSgV7AodOBIAxQ

andplusalso, I have the older version of this: https://www.bissell.com/total-floors-hard-floor-cleaner/  and it is amazeballs! I'm just tired of having to clean all the darn time.

  • jforsythia  hats off to you!!! I'd never have the motivation to do it every day! although when LO is more mobile I might have to....I'm sure he will be eating dog hair otherwise. I've got a mastiff in addition to the shepherd, but he doesn't shed much.

  • We had an early model also, and had a lot of problems with the battery.  They replaced it a couple times but it kept dying.  I'm guessing they're better now.  It was nice to come home and have the house pretty well vacuumed when it did work.

  • I love ours. Keeps the cat hair under control enough between regular vacuuming.

This is without a doubt my most favorite video ever.  I've never had a roomba but I did research them once, thinking I'd maybe get one.  I think it was the pet one....I do recall reading something about having to clean some part often or else it would run around the house but not vacuum, turning into the most expensive thing to chase the cats around ever.

We just got the Hoover air cordless.  Words cannot express how much I love this vacuum.  It's super lightweight, and the cordless factor is amazing.  No more trying to find a plug, can't get into some areas because the cord won't reach, stretching too far and unplugging it.  I zoom around the whole house in under 5 minutes, and as far as I can tell it's got the same suction as our big corded vacuum.  I can go the whole week on one battery, and it comes with two so when it dies you pop one out and put the other one in.

We have two cats that shed like crazy so I vacuum three times a week, but will likely switch to everyday, or at least 5 times a week once LO starts crawling.  With our old vacuum I would have hated doing it so often but this one makes it fun (and no I promise I don't work for Hoover :)

  • We also have a german shepherd and have to vacuum every other day or hair is blowing across the house. We have a fairly small house though. I will for sure be vacuuming every day when she is more mobile. Think I will ask DH for a Roomba for Christmas! (Maybe...I have not even looked up how expensive they are yet.)

  • I love my Roomba.  We run it everyday in the bedroom (has carpet).  would run it through the entire house, but the lab thinks it is a great toy, you know a moving Frisbee!!   The can get themselves stuck in the weirdest places though.

  • I have a vileda virobi, I got it in sale for super cheap so I thought I'd give it a try. It is just a sweeper though, so only does hard surfaces. Good for the kitchen and bathrooms.
I would love a real one, because I have sunken living room and this one does not sense multi level floors.

My son stands in the step and kicks it everytime it comes close. It's like a game, but if he isn't there, yep it falls! Super annoying!

  • I want one but we have so many nooks and crannies because of baby gear and furniture that I don't think it would do a good job... We have hardwood throughout and the dog hair collects in the corner.

I'm googling that cordless Hoover though.... That sounds promising...
