Just scheduled DH's vasectomy!!!

I probably shouldn't be so excited, but this is our 4th child!!!!  We were done at 3, but then, on vacation, SURPRISE!!!  We are obviously thrilled to add a little girl to our pack of boys, but this is it!!  3 weeks from today and he will be snipped  :)

Re: Just scheduled DH's vasectomy!!!

  • My husband just went 2 weeks ago!  I told him I wanted him to do it while I was still pregnant so nothing happened in the meantime between the two samples they have to give after surgery to make sure it was effective.  I kept him supplied in Redbox movies and frozen peas so he wouldn't get tempted to get up and do things outside and cause himself any extra swelling (he is not the type to be able to stay still!)

  • I've been trying to talk DH in to this for years.  Pregnancy is very easy for us to achieve (an oooops wouldn't be far fetched) but we're so high risk than an oooops would likely lead to heartbreak.  So, I'm trying to get DH to understand the pros and cons.  Hopefully, some day!

Just curious...would y'all still take birth control after the vasectomy just to make sure? We're pregnant with our second and may want to have another so this isn't something we're considering yet but wanted to get some good opinions! :D

Because it would be so nice for my hubby to do this when we decide! And even better to not have to remember to take a pill everyday!

Edited: hit post before I was done. Darn!
  • Exact same boat as you @lavet22‌!! Although my hubby isn't booked in yet, all the rest is the same... Lol!! (Well maybe not the girl part) ;)
I'd be curious and interested to know his recovery time, if that's not too weird for you to share here that is. Haha!
  • @caitlindenise-I am not taking birth control after.  I got pregnant with this LO while on the pill, so I don't want to rely on that.  That's why he is having it done now.  So he can have the follow up's to make sure it was successful between now and after my 6wk pp check.

@jjcruiks-DH was supposed to book this appt 2yrs ago!!!!  This time I went ahead and did it myself so I know it will actually get done.  LOL  Sure, I don't mind sharing how it went for him.  We have quite a few friends who have had it done and they usually had it done on a Friday and were fine by Monday.

  • Fabulous news @lavet22‌! I like a recovery time that lasts shorter than a 'man flu'... ;). 4 munchkins (this one being a surprise to us) is plenty for us!! Need to snip that shit before we run out of bedrooms to place these littlins! ;)

I won't be.  I have high blood pressure and my doctors advise against me using hormonal birth control because of the higher risk of blood clots.  Have not used bcp for years.  They have to test sperm samples twice after the procedure to make sure it was effective, so I will feel comfortable just as long as those turn out okay.  They made me sign a paper that I realize it's only 99% effective.  You do need to use some kind of protection between when the procedure is done and they give you the all clear after the second sample.

Mine had it done on a Wednesday, sat around on the couch for 3 days, then we went to a wedding on Saturday.  He was back to work on Monday, though still walking like a cowboy until about Tuesday.  They gave him a jock strap type contraption that he had to wear until his one week checkup.

  • That is great news @namcgee‌!! Seems a ton easier than the invasive surgery of having tubes tied!! I figure I have the babies, so hubs can get the snip! Luckily, he agrees so no persuading him!! These fast recovery stories might even get him excited for the whole procedure!! Lol!!!

I was actually just about to ask if anyone would consider having there tubes tied rather then hubby getting a vasectomy. I like the point you made of you have the baby's so he can get the snip. Very fair:)

I don't want to tie my tubes during my RCS in jan on the off chance we decide we want a 3rd. But my husband won't get a vasectomy down the road which ticks me off. It would be done on base at the hospital I give birth at, and apparently some of his coworkers told him how awful it was for them and blah blah blah. So I can have 2 c sections AND a tubal and you can't handle sitting on a bag of peas for a few days? Ugh.

That's what I told my husband!  Giving birth x 3 plus I had thyroid surgery when our younger son was only 3 months old.  It was his turn! and I took care of him while he recovered just like he took care of me when I could not even reach my arms above my head to wash my hair after my thyroid surgery.
