Throwing food help?

This is really bad with Kieran. He knows how to say "all done" but he'd much rather swing his arm and knock everything off his tray or take fist fulls of food and throw it. We've tried everything. Redirection, taking food away...etc. What drives me nuts is he turns to me and smiles before he does it. I know he's testing me and I'm totally seeing the beginning of the terrible twos. Any advice/thoughts?

Re: Throwing food help?

  • DS likes to look me in the eye as I am saying "no, no" or "don't throw your food, buddy" and... throw it. He does it mostly when he's done eating, but also mid-meal while chewing when he feels he as a little extra to spare.

I have no advice. I hope they outgrow it soon.

  • Unrelated - I loooove the pic of your DS in your siggy. He is making the exact same expression my DS makes when he's outside and studying his surroundings. So cute!

  • Oh yeah, every meal. And I know I shouldn't react but it is so hard. Messes are like a hot button for me. I can't stand it. It seriously makes me want to cry when she flings eggs onto the floor. I wish I had some advice.
**hugs** I know how you feel. It's a combination of food getting in the carpet and knowing the prep time and money spent are being wasted that drives me nuts.

  • Two approaches that might work:

    1.  As soon as food starts flying say "all done.  guess you're not hungry if you're playing.  toys are for playing, not food" and take him out of the highchair.

    2.  Let him throw the food, but have him help you clean it up.  I tried this approach with DS1 and it worked pretty well.  He would get down on the floor and hand me blueberries, crackers, etc.

Hope something works soon, I know how stressful it can be!  Good luck!

  • Another mother of a food-thrower here.  It has been getting a bit better, but I still have to watch him closely because if I turn my back he takes the whole plate and dumps it out.  We moved DS to the table with us in a booster seat, and that has helped a bit.
