BF/Pumping-Are you giving LO vitamin D suppliment?

Went for our one month check up yesterday. I am reading the handout they gave me and it says,

"Breast fed babies should be supplemented with additional vitamin D, found in either TriViSol or D-Vi-Sol (these are available at the pharmacy without a prescription). The recommended dose is 1mL per day. This is necessary because breast milk does not contain sufficient vitamin D."

Our pediatrician didn't mention it in person but LO was crying a lot and we were discussing meds for acid reflux. Anyways, has anyone else been giving this supplement?

  • We give DD the supplement and did the same with DS when he was breast fed as a baby.

  • We did with DD and will with DS, but I hate tri-vi-sol and D-vi-sol...they taste nasty. So we're ordering the Carlson drops from Amazon.
  • We were giving LO a multivitamin but the syringe broke and we haven't been able to get another yet

  • We do.  I've given it for all my boys.  I third (or fourth) the recommendation of Carlson's drops.  So much easier than those droppers full.  I just put it on my finger and he sucks it off.  You can put it on your nipple too.

  • We are doing 1ml of DViSol a day since 2 week check up.
  • Yes, we're using liquid D drops. Any vegans out there who prefer a lanolin-free version, my ped approved the vegan D3 from Nordic Naturals.

  • To D-vi-sol's credit, it's dark and kinda tastes like licorice but my son scarfed it down! Then again, he ate anything that came close enough to suckle! My daughter seems more discriminating (spits out 0.3 ml gas drops), so I didn't want to bother trying the 1mL dose

  • My dr just said to make sure it's in my vitamin and lo will get it.

  • My pedi also told me it wasn't necessary and that he only seen one case of rickets (caused by vit d deficiency) in his 20+ years of practice. Per my doc the real risk is in mothers who are deficient in D (also rare) and to continue my prenatal while BFing. We take LO out on walks daily so she is getting some sun exposure but I may reconsider supplementing this winter.
  • Yep, our pedi gave us a bottle at our 2 week appt. Have been giving 0.8ml daily.
  • I am waiting for my Carlson drops to arrive from amazon. Speaking of that, I have been awful about remembering my prenatals since DS was born.

  • I try and get both my kids (and myself!) out in the sun for a bit each day, then I don't worry much about supplementing. I do have liquid supplements though and give it to them if we haven't been outside much. In the winter, I make sure to give bit D supplements
  • Apparently my pedi forgot to tell me about this at my 2 week appt, when I was supposed to start, but I've got some now.  I am going to do it because breastmilk is low in vit D and even if you are taking a prenatal or multivitamin, it doesn't transfer into the milk that well.  Also, you aren't really supposed to expose your infant to much sunlight at this age so I don't want to rely on that for Vit D synthesis.
