3 times in 2 days!

So I have officially been living in France now for one year. My neighbor who is a live in nanny asked me yesterday if I was my sons nanny. I've lived here for a year! She's seen my husband and me out and about with our son!! Then today at a cafe the waitress asked me the same thing! Just when I thought twice in two days was enough. A mother at the park asked me the same question! What the heck! I know that it probably has something to do with the fact that you don't see many biracial people and you certainly don't see them at my age... having children. So I'm sure they can't imagine what my child could possibly look like. Everyone has been very apologetic once I tell them he's my son. It's not that I'm upset. I think I'm just shocked it's been asked so frequently the past two days.
I attached a family pic. He's a good mix of the two of us facially. I think the fair skin and blonde hair throw people off. Tried to delete the second photo but no luck...bonus!

  • I get it too. My favorite is when people tell me that my oldest dd looks like my husband. She is biologically not his, I always look at them and just say ugh yeah science. Then I walk away. It is because my kids look completely caucasian. Whatever people are stupid.

  • (1) @amberb612, your son is ADORABLE! I love that smile of his, so infectious!
    (2) Is it a France thing because it's less common or something? Even if I had my suspicions, I would never blatantly ask that question! But they're French, so who knows???

  • It's not like the US most people are French. There not a mix of things. Most of the diversity in France is in Paris...not where I am. I do see a few French men with African woman and they have children. It's a newer thing. I haven't seen anyone who looks like me. Oh and the French have no problem asking you things like that, or handing out parenting advice.
  • Oh and thanks! We think he's pretty cute ;)
  • I'll have to ask my French teacher how to say that! But, The French really don't understand sarcasm so it also might get me into big trouble.
  • Silly French broads. Pay no mind to their prying questions and unsolicited parenting advice.

And I actually think your son looks a lot like you!

  • People are rude. Our two boys look very similar, except older son has my coloring (dark hair and dark eyes) and younger son has H's coloring (blond hair and blue eyes). I've had people ask if they're both mine or if they have the same dad. Ridiculous.

You have a beautiful family :)

  • I have a friend in an almost identical situation. The father is white and her son has light skin and blonde hair. I've seen her react a handful of different and hysterical ways but my favorite by far is when she acts completely (and believably) shocked and pretends that someone must have swapped her baby.
    Gorgeous family btw :)

If it makes you feel any better, I get asked if I'm my parent's nanny on a semi regular basis. I'm 28, but frequently get mistaken for as young as teen years. My brother is 14, and my sister is 8. (That's my sister and I in my avatar) My mom and dad both look like they're no older than 40. Depending on what I wear on family outings, I get an amusing range. Sometimes they ask my kid brother if he wants a beer and hand me a children's menu.

  • I almost forgot how many times I was asked if all of you sisters (4 total) had the same father. I'm sure that really pissed my mom off.
  • I also thought this would be about poop...

Beautiful family. I can't believe that people ask that...it would be pretty uncommon to ask such a thing in the US and would certainly be considered rude. Meh, culture.
  • Beautiful family! People can be rude and some of its ignorance.
