  • See, I pronounce it aw-RAYL-ya (or or-rail-lee-ah) too. Like it was pronounced in Love Actually. It's the only way I've ever heard it.

But when I look this name up on nameberry or babynamewizard or other baby name websites, it lists the pronunciation as "aw-REEL-ya". I like this name (in fact, it's the only name I've even been moderately interested in since I fell in love with Cerys, which DH is only lukewarm about) but I prefer the pronunciation that I am familiar with.

Would it be terrible to use a name and knowingly pronounce it differently than what is "correct"? Does that banish me to baby naming hell like making up a name or inserting a superfluous "y" would do?

    I say it Aw-rail-e-ah

    I think it's a lovely name

(ETA: I voted the second option)

  • @aerotigergirl‌ - as someone who studied phonetics, I have never trusted babycenter's description of pronunciation as anything near accurate.

I would name your child what you want. As long as you aren't creating some unique spelling for a normal name, it's fine IMO - like Meekayluh for Michaela). For example, both Aeh-nah and Ah-nah are correct ways are pronouncing Anna. Ahn-dray-uh and Aen-dree-ah are both correct ways of pronouncing Andrea. Sure, she will probably have to correct some people who pronounce it wrong, but that doesn't mean it's a bad name to choose.

I picked Ryan for a boy. I already know that I will have to tell everyone "Ryan with an R" because people assume when they hear it but it's Bryan. NBD.

  • Aww this was our name! Too bad we are having a boy. ;)

FWIW I pronounce it the same way you do and when we were going to use it I didn't care that online said differently.

  • Thanks for the feedback, everyone!

Now, of course, I just keep thinking how nice Cerys Aurelia sounds together. I'm just not sure it goes well with our very simple, single-syllable last name (Hall).

I'm not sure Aurelia Hall sounds very nice. Like, maybe Aurelia sounds too frilly or exotic when paired with our LN?
