How long to pump?

I recently started back to work and have started pumping again.  I pumped for 8 months at work with my older daughter (until she was 13mo) and plan to do the same with my younger daughter.  I have noticed that the majority of my milk is expressed within the first 5 minutes of pumping though.  I would love to only pump for 5 minutes, but I seem to recall this will effect my supply long term right?  Do you pump for a set amount of time or just until things seem to run dry?

Re: How long to pump?

  • I pump an average of 20 minutes/session.  I typically will get another letdown later in the session and get quite a bit more milk, so I will usually stop after the second letdown unless my breasts still feel full.

  • Yeah, that's kind of what I figured.  I pump for 20 minutes and never get a second let down.  I spend 15 or so minutes with nothing happening, but I'll keep it up as long it's telling my body I need all milk it'll give me.

  • I've always done 10-12 minutes and that's been good for me.
  • I always pump for at least 20 minutes. Sometimes I go to 25. If I'm at 15 minutes and I haven't had a second letdown, I hit the letdown button to trigger another one. (I have a Medela PISA)

  • It depends for me which pump I'm using. With the Medela Symphony, I pump 12-16 min. With my PISA, 15-20.

  • I used to pump for 15 but in the past month I've been pumping for 25-30 minutes, 4 times a day. I noticed if I kept pumping, I'd get another letdown around 22 minutes.
I really only have 20 minutes at best to pump at work so that is unfortunate.  I think I'll just pump the full 20 minutes and reset the machine for another let down at 15 and see if anything happens.  Serious question, don't your nipples get sore pumping for 30 minutes 4 times a day?  Are you EP?
