GTKY: Pranks Gone Wrong

Have you ever pulled a prank on someone and have it completely backfire?  Or has anyone pulled a prank on you that scarred you for life?

My father - God love him - didn't understand child psychology when he was raising my brothers and I as young children.  He thought he had an awesome idea to pull one over on me on April Fool's Day.  I was maybe 6 or 7, at that age when I was still learning how to read.  He wrote me a letter from the Easter Bunny, and I needed help reading it because I could only read maybe 60% of the words.  And it said: "Dear L - You've been a very naughty girl this year so you won't be getting any Easter treats.  No toys, no candy, no baskets, and I won't hide any eggs for you."  It went on explaining what I did wrong and I started crying hysterically.  My dad felt awful so he picked me up and told me it was just a joke but I was way too young to understand, I sincerely believed in the Easter Bunny, and I thought it was real.  He couldn't convince me that HE was the one who wrote the letter.  I kept saying "No, Daddy, the Easter Bunny wrote it!"

It's really hilarious now looking back on it but I think my dad learned his lesson.  I got lots of treats that Easter :)

  • Haha!

It's not really a prank, but when my nephew found out that his new baby cousin was a girl, he started hysterically crying. He was 4 at the time.

I remember when I was around 6-7 my grandpa did something similar to me at Christmas. He gave me coal (like real coal, in a bucket) and told me that's what we were getting for Christmas. I knew it was from him, but I thought he was really serious. I started crying. LOL

  • Has anyone seen the video of the dad who shaves his beard off, and when he comes out of the bathroom his daughter bursts into tears? She's probably around 1. It's so sad! I couldn't tell if she didn't recognize him, or was sad the beard was gone.

When I was young, my dad (a white dude) had a huge afro - he was trendy in the 80's :P

I was watching Press Your Luck (that game show with the whammies) and the player on the show was an African American gentleman with a large afro.  I was 2 or 3 and pointed at the screen and started shouting "Daddy!  Daddy!!!"  My mom thought it was hilarious.

Kids pick out identifying features and stick with them!  I think I would've flipped out if my dad shaved off his afro!

  • I personally haven't pulled any great pranks but I love watching the Jimmy Kimmel pranks like "I told my kid I ate all of their Halloween candy" and "I gave my child a terrible Christmas present."

That happened to me when I was a kid! I was about three or so when my dad came home with his beard shaved off. I hid behind the couch and wouldn't come out. I had no idea who that man was.
  • I remember being about eight and setting up an April Fool's prank. I stayed up late and tied a rubber band around the handle of the sink sprayer to make it spray right at the next person who turned the sink on. Unfortunately, by the next morning, I had forgotten what I had done. So of course the next  person who turned on the sink was ME. Dumbass.
  • When I was really little I loved hardboiled eggs. My grandma used to trick me into biting into whole, uncooked eggs by swearing they were hard boiled. Looking back I feel like I should have been able to tell the difference. I'm not really mad about it, those were some of the only times I ever saw her laugh, so I guess good for her?
I later had a stepdad who would force me to smell his food because "it smells funny". I knew he was going to shove it up my nose but he wouldn't shut up until I smelled it.

That's where the backfire comes into play. The joke is ultimately on him, he had to eat food that was in my nose. Super gross.

  • When I was a child, maybe 10, my parents couldn't seem to get me to wake up on Christmas morning. They tried singing Christmas carols; Dad even brought in his guitar. The my dad got the bright idea to go "Courtney, GET UP! YOU ARE GOING TO BE LATE FOR SCHOOL!" and I woke up in an absolute panic, grabbed my backpack, and tried to run out the front door. When I got to the gift laden living room, instead of being relieved at the understanding that it was Christmas morning, I burst into tears. I became utterly hysterical. I was inconsolable over having been woken up in a flurry of stress. I still hear about this one.

  • My little sister has always been one of those very easily frightened people. One time (I was about 15or 16 and she was 12 or 13), we had just watched The Panic Room as a family and my dad told me to scare her (sweet, right?) So I ran up to her room and hid behind her bed. I knew in my head that this was a bad idea, so when she finally got up to her room, I waited for her to turn on the lights and I stood up from behind her bed and whispered "boo" in an attempt to scare her without making her go apeshit.

Well, I failed. She started clawing at me like she was possessed and screaming in this really deep voice. Luckily the bed was between us or my face might have been clawed off. After a few seconds, she started grabbing her chest and neck area like she was chiking and saying "you really scared me" in this creepy deep voice and crying hysterically. My mom had to have her put her head between her knees and breathe into a bag. I got in huge trouble (and so did my dad) and, to this day, my sister swears she had an out-of-body experience and watched the whole thing happen from above. She also claims she "became" that scary man on the movie and that's why her voice was so deep. She is 25 and still claims this. I am 28 and I remember her speaking in a voice that was not her own so I almost believe her. A simple prank became one of the scariest moments in both out lives!
