Best Product for Preventing Stretch Marks?

I've been doing some research, and I know that whether or not I get stretch marks is, for the most part, genetic. But, I figure using a pregnancy safe product on my belly throughout pregnancy won't hurt. If it works, awesome! If not, at least I tried and my belly will be well moisturized!

Any recommendations?

Re: Best Product for Preventing Stretch Marks?

  • Not only is it genetic but what you see during pregnancy might not be all you get. I found wayyy more stretch marks after my son was born. I just used an intensive lotion to help with the itching.

  • Just use something that feels good and has a nice smell. My H bought me Bio Oil because he saw all the adverts for it. It doesn't do anything for stretch marks, but it really smells nice, and definitely helped with the itching and stretching feel. I used it my whole pregnancy and still have stretch marks. But I smelled great, and didn't itch, which are the only things that matters.... ;)

  • I'm using Palmer's Cocoa Butter for overall moisturizing (the version in the tub), and I like it. Super thick. I got stretch marks on my boobs and inner thighs when I went through puberty (they've totally faded), so I expect I may get them again, but my mom never had any on her belly, so we'll see.
  • I've been using grape seed oil because it has so many natural benefits, your skin just absorbs it immediately with out leaving you feeling greasy/oily, and it helps recover skin from stretch marks. Its  super cheap, I paid 5 bucks for my bottle I still have 4 months later. Even if it doesnt help for that purpose, its working better than any other lotion for my dried out skin. So, I still win! :)
  • I use Palmer's Cocoa Butter but some light stretch marks are coming in anyways. Oh well! I like the smell and it still makes my skin feel nice and soft.

  • Coconut oil all the way!
  • I use Clarins body tonic...it's pricey but one bottle lasts about 5 months if you only use it on belly/boobs.

Like everyone else said, it won't prevent anything, but it's my splurge and it smells nice. And it 100% helps with the itching/stretching.

  • The only thing that will prevent stretch marks is your genetics. Like PP's have said, just find something that helps you not itch and go with that. I was using the Palmers cocoa butter but I developed a sensitivity to it so I've been using an overnight Aveeno product that works pretty well at keeping me moisturized.

I'm a huge fan of this stuff - all natural ingredients.

SPAM also good for exzema, diaper rash, rough patches and more.

and for itchy baby belly: SPAM

  • Take this with a grain of salt, I used bio oil on my belly everyday of my pregnancy from 2nd trimester and didn't get a stretch mark. I didn't use it on my breasts and l did get stretch marks on both. So, maybe it works, or maybe not.

  • There is nothing to prevent stretch marks, unless you have a magic wand up your sleeve.
  • Australian sorbolene cream:)
  • I have some stretch marks from growing as a teen. Thankfully they are hardly noticeable just white now on my hips and breasts but I expect to get more with pregnancy because I am just predisposed to getting marks when I grow. I have read a whole lot and it basically comes down to genetics. Some women get them, some don't.

Here are things that can supposedly help prevent them:
-Drink lots of water. If your skin is not hydrated it can not stretch.
-Be careful how often you clean your skin and with what. I use Dr. Bronner's soap and I don't soap up during every shower because I am not dirty. Soap strips natural oils from your skin which are the best possible moisturizer on earth.
-Be young. lol not something you can control but younger people will have fewer stretch marks because their skin is more youthful and ready to take on the challenge of stretching and repairing itself.
-Limit weight gain. Sometimes this is out of your control but really eating healthy and staying active will leave you with less stretch marks than if you just allow yourself to gain and gain. It's common sense.
-Exfoliate lightly on the main areas of concern. I use a sugar/olive oil scrub a few times a week. This stimulates collagen production which will enhance your skins ability to stretch and mend.
-After a bath slather on some sort of natural oil. Coco butter is fine. I like organic cold pressed coconut oil because it feels light and is cheap to buy in bulk. Jojoba oil is very similar to skin's natural sebum and is a good choice. The purpose of this is to lock in moisture.

If you take the time to learn about the layers of skin you will realize that stretch marks are on the bottom layer and scars/marks are on our top layer. This is why you can not get rid of old stretch marks through laser resurfacing. There is no cream on earth that can penetrate and affect the bottom layer of skin and if there is it would not be healthy. You also have to consider that everything you put on your skin usually get absorbed into your bloodstream in one way or another and that can get to your baby. You will read reviews of creams claiming "I got NO stretch marks!" and you can pretty much assume that that person probably wouldn't have gotten them anyways. Many women don't but it is just not something you can control outside of doing your best to limit weight gain and care for your body and skin like I mentioned above.
