Preterm birth (need moral support)

Hello!

I've just came from my appointment with OB.  He made the evaluation of my pelvic bone and found that my baby's head is placed too low to be 33 weeks old, so I could go into labor in any time, he asked me for 10 days of rest with my legs lifted. I was already feeling that my baby was too low.

At first I was thinking: "everything is gonna be ok", but few minutes later I started feeling sad and worried that my baby could be preterm. I also started thinking about the things that I still have to do before labor.   The doctor didn't want to worry me, but he even talked about lung maturation options.

Have anyone passed through this? Could you make it until your due date? Anyone in this situation right now? How do you feel about it?

  • I can relate to the fear that comes with preterm labor. I'm another currently on bedrest and it can be scary. I just try and take it one day at a time and am grateful for each day that LO stays in there since I know that's what is best for him. T&P to you!
  • Thank you for all your support! I will keep you updated.

  • *hugs* T&P for you. At least with medical advances these days as opposed to when we were born or earlier, LO has such a good chance and they can catch when things need to be done to prevent pre-term labor.

  • I'm sorry you're facing this stress. Preterm birth is super scary, though it's true baby will probably do OK at this point, especially if you make it to 34 weeks.

I'm a little confused about the doctor's assessment--did you get an ultrasound or did the doctor just feel your pelvis for baby's position? I have had two midwives feel my baby (at 32 weeks and then at 34 weeks) and tell me that her head is "WAY down there." When I asked if that was a concern, both said without a hint of hesitation that it wasn't.

Are you having contractions or any other indication that labor may be near? If not, I would try not to worry too much at this point. FWIW, I carried my last pregnancy really low, too, and was told his head was super low during an ultrasound at 35 weeks (but again, that this wasn't a concern). I carried him to 38w3d.

I hope you can relax a bit--take care and rest!

  • My little brother in law was born at 34 weeks, he only spent two days in the NICU b4 he came home, no complications he is five no and as tall as my 8 year old, but I'll keep u in my thoughts good luck
  • My baby is critically low also

Best thing to do is follow advice. Do you have any progression cervix wise?
  • I was checked on Tuesday at 35 w 2 days and having contractions. 30% effaced, baby very low, doctor stated he had to move her to check my cervix. I am very close to 36 weeks where we are no longer considered pre-term. Hang in there and follow the doctors instructions, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your lo!
  • Sorry you are going through this. Thoughts and prayers for you and baby.

  • So sorry you are going through this. I just had a friend that was induced last night at 34 weeks. The baby has low birth weight but otherwise he is fine. They said he would spend a couple days in NICU but only because of his weight. Hang in there and try to take it one day at a time. They can do amazing things now a days so I am sure everything will be fine.
  • No experience, but I wanted to send T&P. So sorry you are facing this.

Keep your chin up! Im sure everything will be ok. A friend of mine delivered triplets last year at 34 wks and they only had a 2-week NICU stay. Hope baby stays in as long as possible!
  • I'm on week 3 of NICU time after my twins came at 32 weeks- and as scary as it feels right now, 33 weeks is really great and they'll do very well! They will have only a short time in the NICU if you deliver right now, and your doc seems rest will get you even more time. I know it's hard to think about all the things you want to be doing, but rest is the most important one right now. You got this!!!! :)

Well, is my first pregnancy, I can't say yet exactly when I am having a contraction, but I felt my belly too hard a couple of times and the doctor identified that as contraction. He felt my pelvis to know if it is adecuate for vaginal birth, then he found that baby's head was too low. Thank you for your post.

  • Hugs and T&P to you.  I am a little further along than you (35 weeks), but in a similar situation where the baby's head is so low and I'm having cervical changes so my doctor has restricted my activities and I am supposed to rest as much as possible.  So far it has worked for the past week.  I'm sorry that you are worried about baby coming so early.  T&P that baby will stay in at least a couple more weeks and you don't have to worry about lung maturation so much.  Even if you do deliver now, it sounds like your doctor is on top of things and that is great news for you and baby!

Huh... I'm not a doctor, but this sounds seriously suspect to me. Preterm birth risk is better assessed by an internal cervical exam or an ultrasound measurement of cervix length, not by feeling where baby's head is from the outside. Your baby can be very very low in your pelvis but not even resting on your cervix... some babies have to scoot back UP to position their heads at the cervical opening for birth (hard to picture, but your cervix is closer to the back of your body, so imagine baby's head up close to your pubic bone.)

If I were you, I would ask for a transvaginal ultrasound to get a better idea if this is truly a cause for concern. Tons and tons of woman have low babies and carry to term or go overdue. Good luck!
