Another insurance question

We are on a HDHP. The twins are already killing us.

The charge that is really bothering me is for their weight checks. We took them in 2 days after we got home, and then 2 weeks later. Weights were fine, appointments were about 5 minutes long.

They charged us $150 each appointment. So $600 total. Uggggh.

I know it's probably standard, but has anyone ever argued a charge like this with their pediatrician's office? That seems so ridiculous to me.

Re: Another insurance question

  • Yeah, weight checks aren't coded as well checks, so they aren't free. I remember going back and forth w our pedi office when the twins first came home from the NICU at 13 days old. They needed a home-from-the-hospital weight check and a 2w well visit that coincided bc of their NICU time.

We ended up doing 2 visits and paying the copay for one visit even though the visits were virtually identical.

Do you have an FSA you can sign up for? An option to switch to a non high deductible plan?

  • I think the charges are fairly typical.  They are annoying but necessary.  I wouldn't fight them - pediatricians are the least paid physicians and pay very high insurance premiums.

I would switch to a non-high deductible plan as soon as you can.

If they want you to do more weight checks I'd suggest buying a scale and doing them at home. I have this scale and it's always close to or spot on with my pedi's scale.
