Breast pump and Insurance

Has anyone ever rented or bought a breast bump through your health insurance? How does it work?

Re: Breast pump and Insurance

  • Yes.  My provider sent the prescription in to the vendor that worked with my insurance, and they mailed it to my house.  I had a couple different pumps to choose from.

  • Yes... I just called my insurance to ask about it and they gave me the website to go to. I ordered it and never had to pay :-) I think the easiest route is just to call your insurance company.

  • As PPs stated, call your insurance company. Many have different ways of ordering/pickup, and some require prescriptions. Mine did not require a prescription and shipped in the mail within days of making request.
  • My insurance used care centrix. I had to send a prescription in and they sent me a pump. I could choose between the medela Pisa or the ameda purely yours. I had to wait until 60 days before my due date before I could order it.

  • My insurance only covers a manual pump. I'm all sorts of jealous of you ladies who have good choices.
  • I called my insurance company and was lucky enough that they provided a free one. They gave me four different sites I could order from all having different options. I ordered the medala starter breast pump put in my insurance info and got it in less than two weeks. I recommend calling your insurance company to see of yours offers the same. Good luck
  • I went to: https://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/insurance-pump-lookup
and followed the instructions from there.  Very simple and once the wheels were turning and insurance was notified, I received my breast pump in a matter of days.
  • Due to health care reform, you should be eligible for a free breast pump through a durable medical equipment provider unless your plan sponsor decided to be grandfathered and not adopt the requirement. I purchased mine through yummymummy store.com and received it within a few weeks :) call your insurance carrier for more info.
  • I called my insurance and they explained the process. For me it was covered 100% through a durable medical equipment store (which they could help me locate) or I could buy one online or through a retail store and send the receipt and they would reimburse up to $200 minus tax. I went the reimbursement route.

If you call the insurance company they will walk you through it.

  • I went thru Aeroflow (luckily it was an in network medical supply co) and used their website form. You just fill everything out and they can do all the leg work for you and will contact your insurance company, doctor, all that. A rep will contact you and tell you everything you need to know, if it's covered, what's covered, pricing/copays, ect.
The customer service reps I talked to were so helpful and so informative!
I got a medela pump for free under my insurance. You don't have to pay for shipping either! They also will give you options if you want to upgrade your pump.
  • Same as previous posts. I called my insurance company and they told me to call about 6 weeks before my due date and they will ship it out for free. They didn't give me a choice of pumps, but they provide the Madela pump. Hey it's free :)

  • Per health care reform, again if your plan isn't grandfathered, you should have six free visits to a lactation consultant within a 12 month period... Just something to remember and inquire on too :)
  • My insurance said I couldn't get mine until I delivered. Doc wrote the scrip at hospital and they brought it to my room. No choice but it I'd a Medela double electric.
