how mad would you be?

Went to Dennys for breakfast and the server dumped a whole glass of coke on top of E.

Like right over the top of his head.. I mean I know accidents happen but it could have been my coffee.

I demanded a new server but she sort of acted like I should feel bad for the first guy bc he feels terrible about it.

I told dh I want bonus points for not issuing a tp and making a huge scene.

  • The were all apologetic and thankfully we sat him in the high chair and not his car seat. Something to laugh about in a few years I guess.

  • i would have been upset but i agree that the level would be based on how the server handled it. having been a server for many years i have dropped more than one soda on a person..i even once dropped an entire milkshake on an elderly woman--oh i felt so horrible! accidents happen, a lot in the restaurant business. not to say that its okay, because its not! but when someone is carrying a tray full of drinks, it can happen. and to be honest, i think demanding for a new server was a bad idea. the first server would've spent the whole rest of the meal trying to make up for it. i know when i dropped the milkshake i bought the lady her dinner and when she came back the next time i got them dessert bc i still felt so bad. (i like dropped the milkshake in an epic fashion.it was EVERYWHERE. but she proceeded to tell me how much of a klutz and idiot i was successfully made me cry)

luckily it wasn't hot coffee. it would have been even better if it were water. but as long as LO is okay i think i would've been okay with it. more annoyed than anything else. having to clean up LO on the go is a major pain in the butt

Apparently I'm in the minority here, but I wouldn't have been all that furious. Startled, sure, and annoyed? Yes. But I know that mistakes happened, and if I were that waitress I personally would have been horrified at my mistake and sincerely apologetic.

I would not have requested a new server. I would hope that something be comped on the bill, and I would hope that a manager came out to apologize also.

I once dropped a handful of change into someone's yogurt. I've also accidentally sprayed hot fudge onto a customer's shirt. I might be a little biased on this topic. ;-)

  • It happens, and as people have said, the server will have felt awful. I had someone get out of a chair as I walked past with a bowl of hot soup that ended up all over me and the customer. I've also had people stand up mid-serve and I've ended up wearing their dinner. You just have to grin and get on with it I'm afraid

  • Yes, I would be annoyed and LO probably wouldn't have been too happy with a cold soda dumped on her head, but wouldn't have asked for a new server. I am assuming as well that the waitress felt awful, and was apologetic, which it sounds like she was.

I was a server for 3 years and it is pretty much impossible to be perfect. I've spilled red wine on white pants before to name one incident. I used to work in fine dining, where even dropping a fork in the dining room is a faux paux, and one of my coworkers straight up dropped a $40 duck plate onto one of my customers laps. Oops!
  • Maybe the asking for a different server was overkill.. ill admit. I was trying to keep my cool and in someways i maybe felt a little uncomfortable about all eyes being on us but leaving felt like too much.

If i dumped soda on him that's my bad and I'd feel awful but as a total double standard I guess.. its just different and it upset me.

I want to add to though that I have the upmost respect for anyone in the service industry and I'm sure it ruined dudes whole day.

Consider it a spin-off of the Ice Bucket Challenge? :-??

Seriously, being a waitress/waiter is hard. Like really hard. That was my first job and it was awful. Accidents happen and when they do, it's hard to get over. I dropped one glass cup in the kitchen. One. And glass went everywhere. 8 years later and I still remember how embarrassed I felt. I can absolutely guarantee that the server felt so bad, and won't ever forget doing that to your baby. Do I think that at any given time a tray should be passed over anyone's head--absolutely not. That was a big rule when I was a waitress. But I think you went a little over the top in asking for a new server. Shit happens. I would feel bad for my LO because they have no clue what just happened, but beyond that... oh well.

    Edit spelling
  • So did they comp part of your meal?

  • I've been a server before. Stuff gets dropped. It happens and obviously not on purpose. I would have been startled but it's not like the server intentionally poured a soda on your lo's head.
  • Depending on my mood I may have been mad/annoyed, but probably not mad enough to make a big deal out of it.
I was just at Olive Garden and had R in the Ktan. I got servered my soup and the young guy waiter told me to be careful eating it as to not spill any on LO head. He was so right I had to laugh at myself for not thinking about it before I shoveled the food in. :\">
  • Not very. I'm. A massive klutz and have probably dropped the same stuff on my baby's head.
