October 2014 Moms

Got my US report emailed to me...

So here is what it says about my placenta previa:

Placenta: Anterior. Inferior margin of placenta covers cervical muscle without definite covering of internal os on transvaginal exam. This is at least a marginal placenta previa. No abruption.

I'm scheduled for 9/10 for my follow up u/s, so I know I'll find out more then. Sounds like it is just marginal, which is the "best" kind of placenta previa to have, I guess, because it's the least serious. But the part of the report that says "At least a marginal placenta previa" bothers me because it makes it seem like it could be more than just marginal.

Re: Got my US report emailed to me...

  • I don't have any experience with previa, but I'm hoping if there's a chance that it can still move for you that it will!  Keep us updated when you talk to the doc.

Hmmm. Well I hope you get things figured out, it's still just complete bullshit that you are JUST finding out now.

That's what makes me so upset. What would have happened if no one ever mentioned it to me and my placenta didn't move and I tried to give birth vaginally?

    Motherfuckers.

    :-S

  • So freaking ridiculous.  FX it moved over the last few weeks.

Are you going to say something to the MW who didn't report this, or anything to the head of the practice?
This is the best part - the head of the practice, who owns the birth center, is the midwife who missed it originally and told me everything was normal. Today, I saw one of the MWs that has joined the practice this year, and she was the one who caught it.

  • Ugh! I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I hope it's moved and everything checks out great at your next ultrasound.

  • FX it moved! I can't believe they just told you today. I hope they bring pizza to all your future appointments to attempt to make it up to you.

  • Wait, I feel like I missed something here. And if I feel that way, you must really feel misguided. This report is from your 20-week US? This is crazy late information! I hope everything looks better at next week's US.

Yeah it is from my 20 week scan! The midwife I saw at my appt following it missed it and told me everything was normal. Saw a different mw today and got the bomb dropped on me.

  • That is utterly ridiculous. Fx that it has moved out of the way and you don't have to worry with it.

I still can't believe something like that was overlooked. Mind boggled.

So, I know previa is bad, just based on what ladies here have said about it. If I remember correctly, the placenta is basically in the way of the cervix, yes? So if it hadn't moved by the time delivery rolled around and you didn't know about it until then, what could happen? (I'm almost scared to ask, but looking it up just says it's reason for a c-section.)

From what I know, it can lead to extreme and sudden blood loss (which could potentially lead to the loss of mother and/or baby) if a woman with previa tries to give birth vaginally. I did read in some cases of very mild previa it is possible to birth vaginally, but there is no way in hell I would risk that at a birth center with a midwife. If it hasn't moved, I'm calling my old OB and begging their office to let me finish my pregnancy with them.

  • Fingers crossed it moved. If you've been having any sex and never any bleeding since then, count yourself lucky! You missed the boring pelvic rest period.

No bleeding whatsoever since before I got my BFP. I'm thinking it probably resolved itself, but damn, hate finding out about it at almost 34 weeks.

  • So sorry that you found out so late. FX that it has resolved by now and if it hasn't, that you can go back to your old OB's office.

  • I would seriously TP someone! I was pissed at my office for waiting 3 weeks + an office visit to tell me (a/s was a Monday, appointment on Friday and they called me over two weeks later) Then they had the bitchy OB nurse call and basically scared the shit out if me. But to overlook it for months!! I'm so upset for you right now! I'm glad you finally got the info and will be rechecked soon. FX that it moved!
  • It's been a while, so if it WAS partial, I would think there's a good chance it's moved. I mean, I am just pulling that out of thin air, because I know nothing, but I do know a lot of women who went through it and it was fine. I think my one friend was as far along as 37 or 38 weeks when they rechecked her, and it had moved by then. SO, fingers are crossed for that.

  • Wow, I'd be pissed they didn't mention it either. Not that it excuses the MWs negligence in any way, but on the upside maybe in the end it saved you weeks of worrying if it has moved (fx!).

The odds are very much in your favor. 90% of the time it resolves itself by birth.  At my a/s I had a 1.7cm overlap on my cervix (so a partial previa), at 33 weeks it was 2.7cm away from the cervix (no longer even a marginal previa) and I just had another ultrasound today at 35 weeks and its already more than 5cm away.

  • Mine was partial and diagnosed at my A/S. They checked again at 28w and it had moved up significantly. FX yours is all clear too! I think your chances are pretty good here.

Still, you have every right to be pissed. I hope you don't let them off the hook too easily. Rage at your MW(s). Rage!
