WWYD: 3 day business trip when Baby is 2mo. old

I'm a FTM, baby's due date is Sept 18, and I need to commit (or not commit) to a business trip in mid-November now. I'm planing to breastfeed and I'm just wondering what the more experienced moms out there think of introducing a bottle (w/ pumped milk) around 2 months (depending on when baby actually shows up). Thanks in advance for your advice...

  • You can certainly introduce a bottle!  I assume if you're going on a business trip you are also returning to work in which case wouldn't your baby be getting a bottle at daycare?  I would personally opt out of the trip though just knowing how hard pumping is and that I wouldn't want anything to potentially mess with my supply.  However, I don't respond fabulously to a pump so that colors my opinion.
Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • I work from home, and I'm thinking that this will probably be my first trip away from baby. My husband feels pretty confident about watching baby while I'm gone - he just wanted to be sure that I left him with enough food. :)

  • At 2 months? If it's not mandatory I would not go.

  • I wouldn't go either. If you can get out of it, I would.

I would say 3 days away from baby is going to be hard, especially with a 2 month old. You will have to pump every 2 hours while you are going to be gone (will that be realistic on this work trip?). In addition you will have to pump around 90 oz of BM to leave for your H for the 3 days you are gone. Thats a ton milk for not a lot of time to prep. If it was me and I had an option I would absolutely decline this trip. Bfing is hard at the beginning, especially with out having to stress over pumping such a large amount.
I have to agree with this.  If you have the option, I would decline.

  • I would skip it if you can. If not, I'd see if hubby could travel with you and baby so you could still nurse at night and evenings. There is a risk of your LO developing bottle preference at such a young age...since drinking from a bottle is a lot easier. You could then end up having to EP which is a lot of work.

Same here. At only 2 months old you'll have to pump a LOT not only during the trip but also before you leave. My biggest concern would be pumping all that milk ahead of time while still nursing LO. I wouldn't go.

  • Thanks everyone. I appreciate all of the input. I'm still not sure what I will end up doing, but you've given me a lot of good information to consider.
