Baby sign language

Has anyone successfully had their lo's sign? When did you start signing, what book/DVD did you use, and when did it catch on? I've tried out of habit to start signing "milk" before giving her a bottle, but she's only 2months. Is it too early?

Re: Baby sign language

  • I don't think it it too early. Although I just started doing it with my 12 month old I wish I would have started sooner.

I just went off if motions from you tube. She knows just a few if them now. I think the earlier the better. Babies brains are like sponges. It will probably help you a lot when she's creeping up on one year. GL!!

  • I taught DS1 to sign "more" when he was little, and it was awesome that he could communicate that with us before he learned to speak.  So I want to try more signs and start earlier with DS2.

It's not too early to start signing to your baby, but s/he won't be able to do the signs back to you for awhile.  But the earlier you start, the earlier they will probably understand it, so it certainly can't hurt anything to start now.  They need to have the motor skills to make the signs too though, not just cognitive ability.

  • My ds now 2, started daycare when he was about 4 months old and they always did it in there. He always signed milk, more, and a few other words. It was great when he couldn't talk. He did it until right before he was too. He sometimes still does it now and then.
  • I have been thinking of starting this so our daughter can eventually tell my husband what she needs.  I understand her cries and he doesn't and gets frustrated when he can't fix whatever is wrong.

  • We used "more","milk" and "thank you with DS 1. I don't remember his exact age but I remember him being in his high chair and eating baby food and using them. That gives you a time frame.

  • Awesome. I figured it wasn't too early, but didn't know when to expect them to sign back. Thanks for everyone's insight who have gone through this with previous lo's!!!

  • I'm excited to try this with my DS. A friend of mine taught her DS: more, milk, please, thank you, hot, and wet. She said it really helped him avoid tantrums as he got older.
