Newborn in CD?

FTM and planning on using CD. Two questions here, do you start using CD as soon as baby is born ? My mother said that new babies poop might be hard to clean off of a CD. She is worried I will be too busy durring the first weeks with baby that it might be stressful using them that early and insists on purchasing a box of disposables, I really dont want to put nappies on a new sensitive bum.. but worried she may be right. Can anyone share their experiences with newborn CDing? Also, one size fits all ? Or new born and sizes ? Help! :)

Re: Newborn in CD?

  • It's actually easier with nb poop. It is water soluable, you just toss the dirty diaper in the wash. It gets harder when baby starts solids and you need to remove the poop before it goes in the washer.

One size diapers do NOT fit newborns. You will need a separate stash of nb diapers before OS fit, but it is worth it. You get the most bang for your buck CDing newborns because you go through SO MANY diapers every day. NBs love to poop in clean diapers, and during diaper changes. NB diapers also have excellent resale value becasue they are only used for a few weeks.

I like prefolds and coves for nb stage. Easy and inexpensive.

  • I see how the covers and prefold work better for NB. How many do you suggest getting in NB size ? I was looking at charlie banana CD and fell in love with them. You put the inserts inside .. whats that called ? Easy to use when older or even at all ?
  • You can start CDing right away. Meconium typically cleans off of cloth no problem. However, OS diapers do not fit newborns, so you must either:
    1. Use disposables until the OS diapers fit. This is what I did, but I was a very overwhelmed first time mom and had no help from family (other than DH). Now that I've done cloth, it is NBD and with baby #2 we will use cloth right away.
    2. Buy a NB Stash. This is what most people around this board do, NB stashes hold their value really well since they are used for such a short amount of time. 24-36 changes are recommended for the newborn phase.
    3. Do a newborn diaper trial. You rent various newborn diapers and get to try out  and see what you like, what brands you like, what works for your family, and return the diapers for store credit when you're done with them. Jillian's Drawers is a popular one around here, but lots of CD stores offer this.

    I hope this helps!

Those are pockets. You use the diaper once then wash it. With prefolds or fitteds and covers, you can wipe and reuse the cover. You should watch the 7 part cloth diapering 101 YouTube series to explain the different types of diapers.
  • Another vote for prefolds (or flats) and covers for newborn stage. They are super easy to clean.

Charlie Bananas aren't my favorite because you adjust the size inside the leg gussets with a bra strap, essentially. They are called pockets, btw.

The FAQ thread has good info on all the different types and brands.

    My favorite is Best Bottoms.
Kawaii pure& natural and little green baby bamboo are good options for that in between stage after newborn, but before the one size truly fit.
Bum Genius is good too, but their aplix (hook and loop) sucks, so snaps are best for them.

We usually recommend 36 changes for NB. So 36 prefolds and 6-8 covers. I would recommend trying different styles though. So maybe 24-30 prefolds and a few fitteds like GMD workhorses, and a couple AIOs and pockets like the redesigned kawaii pure & nautrals.

The Charlie Banana's you are talking about are pockets. Pockets are a really popular option, they go on in one piece like a sposie, but come apart for washing easier than an AIOs.
Charlie Banana brand seems to be a love/hate kind of brand. I personally did not like them. I sold mine and replaced them with much cheaper Kawaii pockets.

I like pockets a lot now that DS is older, but for runny nb poop I preferred prefolds.

Watch this video series, it explains all the different types and a lot of brands.

  • Hi! I am also a FTM and we are planning to CD. We have decided to be flexible about it though and use disposables (Seventh Generation) when traveling or out for the day or doing laundry whatever. We are also going to use cloth and disposable wipes, just depending on the situation.

Our plan is prefolds and covers for the newborn stage, and a few fitted diapers just to try out different brands. That way we can decide what diapers we prefer to make the bulk of our stash later on. We are going to also look at used newborn lots which usually include prefolds, covers, and other diapers.

We are leaning towards fitted diapers after the newborn stage and up to the first year and then one size diapers depending on how our baby grows. But I have seen others have great luck with just using disposables until about 4 months and then one size (bumgenius 4.0 one size, for example). But there is no telling what we will do for sure. It isn't something you can buy in advance and know for sure will work for you, most people have several different types of diapers used in different situations. Some have a favorite for overnight, or a fitted for under certain clothes. My friend bought 24 newborn sized fitted diapers but went into labor early and needed to use disposables for a little over a month because her baby was 5 lbs and long.  So just know you can't really know before you meet your baby but prefolds and covers are a sure bet as long as only you and your H will be doing the changing.

  • If you are really concerned about meconium (no need to be!) you can always use flushable diaper liners at first. Like others said, meconium and EBF poop comes out a lot easier than when the baby starts eating solids. I just don't care about staining. A stain does not mean a diaper is unsanitary. I plan to lay the diapers out in the sun to "sun bleach" every once and a while to reduce staining but it just isn't really a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I will also say we are planning to reuse CDs between kids (planning for 2 or 3) so that is why we are considering splurging on some fitteds. I am also considering some velcro options just because it seems so much easier for middle of the night changes than fussing with snaps, and a babysitter or nanny will find them easier to learn. But snaps are harder for older babies to take off which is a big plus and obviously last longer. We also have a CD service in our area of prefolds. It is about $25/week or $100 a month which could be nice for first time parents worrying about the transition but still wanting to cloth diaper for health reasons. Not much of a money savings.

Also regarding meconium, if you are in the hospital for 48 hours with your LO, it will probably all have passed anyway. And I would say most of this board uses hospital disposables and then start cloth when they get home.

We used newborn cloth about part-time at first, and disposables overnight for the first few weeks.
