NBR: Urticaria (hives) anyone?

This is mainly an I need support post. I have been having unexplained hives for 2 weeks now. Nothing in my life has changed so there is no reason I should have them. They have been covering my thighs and stomach, but also pop up on my lower legs, arms, chest, and even neck last night. Also, because I am breastfeeding, the dr told me there is nothing I can do but take 25 mg benedryl at night and use a topical steroid cream. Um...how can I cover my whole body with cream? Has anyone had any experience with this? I've read this can last for 6-8 weeks and I just might scratch my eyeballs out by that point. Halp!!!

  • oatmeal baths are supposed to help relieve the itch...

oatmeal also boosts supply, so maybe eat your bathwater afterward.

  • You can take Benadryl 50mg every 8 hors actually. He probably said at night, since it's known to make people sleepy. You could try 50mg at night and 25 during the day. And just try to get the cream as best as you can. No prednisone? (Oral steroid?)

I was out of town and went to an urgent care where I think the dr was clueless about breastfeeding and what is safe to take. My sis in law is in school to be a nurse practitioner and said an oral serious should be fine. I don't currently have a PCP because of all our moving so I am not sure if I should go back to see another dr or not. I am tempted to since I was not impressed with the first looking up online what was safe for me to take. #didntyougotoschoolforthis

  • Yikes.  Sorry I can't offer any advice, but I hope it all clears up soon and you can find some relief.

  • Sorry, I wasn't taking the breastfeeding into account. Low dose steroids are usually safe for nursing moms. The biggest potential side effect for baby with Benadryl would be drowsiness, or possibly the opposite (sometimes happens with kids). You could nurse, and then take the Benadryl dose though, and space it out. Depends on how uncomfortable you are :(

Here's a page from drugs.com. A link for kellymom came up in my google search, but I'm getting ready for work and getting baby breakfast. You may check it out.
    Hope it gets better soon!

  • I got hives while in labor (fun, fun) and they stuck around for 3 weeks. My ob and the pedi told me just benadryl. My pcp did say he would prescribe steroids if I could not take it any more, but I did not try that. The benadryl did really made DS sleepy, he was waking up to eat and that was about it. I know our babies are older now but I would watch to see if your benadryl is making your LO too sleepy.

Hope they clear up for you soon. Hives suck!

  • Oh and stress can cause hives. You mentioned you just moved, that is always stressful. I know it is easier said then done, but try to relax, it might help they go away.

  • Thanks guys! They were just happening at night and then going away during the day, but now it's all the time. I am probably going go go back to the dr and make sure there is nothing else I can do. It's 85 degrees outside and I'm wearing pants because I look like I have some strange disease with all the red spots and wheals.

  • My coworker would break out in hives if they cranked the A/C up too high or if it was a really cold, windy day.

I had awful hives all throughout my pregnancy, every day, starting about 12 weeks.  It was wild.  It eventually got so bad I had to take a Claritin a day on the advice of my OBGYN.  I was eventually able to take one about every 3-4 days and it would keep them at bay.  I was so anti taking something like that during pregnancy but my OB assured me it was fine and my daughter is perfection.  I would think since it was ok during pregnancy, it would be ok during breastfeeding as well.  You may be able to take it every couple days like I did too.
