Are any of y'all allergic to bugs?

Apparently my 4 year old has some sort of allergy. It runs in my family, so not surprising. She got two ant bites this weekend and her foot and ankle swelled up huge. I have been so worried about it and nervous if she were to get stung by a bee. In my family it's just extreme localized swelling, and no airway restrictions, so that makes it better. I just don't know if there is a reason I should call her doctor. Do any of y'all react that way? How long does it take for the swelling to go down? She got bit Saturday evening.

  • Call the pedi to ask about Benadryl. I have a ridiculous reaction to Mosquitos. Swelling so bad I turn black and blue. A few weeks ago I got one on my side, it legit looked like a 3rd boob. For me, the swelling is worst days 2-3, and lasts about a week. But no reaction to other kinds of bug bites. And Benadryl helps a ton.

  • They also make a Benadryl cream you can ask your pediatrician about if you don't want to give an entire oral dose to her. I have somewhat of a reaction to mosquito bites and wasp stings, but I have never had a severe allergic reaction to bee stings. Allergies can be totally weird and unpredictable, so don't worry too much. Just make sure you always keep some Benadryl with you, and look for any signs of mouth or facial swelling or hives should she get stung by anything. And of course if you ever do see signs of facial/mouth swelling call 911 immediately and give her Benadryl ASAP.
  • I have allergy to bug bites, I swell, bruise & am in sever pain at times. I take Benadryl as I have never had an anaphylactic reaction.
My doctor has prescribed me an epi pen just in case, so if you are concerned you could ask your pedi about getting one to have one hand.

  • I react like this to wasp stings. Luckily it's only happened a couple of times. No advice...but good luck!

Also - I hope that those of you who react this badly to mosquitos aren't from MN/WI! You'd have a hell of a time in the summers here....
LOL, I am from WI. Summers are a problem. I basically bathe myself in DEET and wear long sleeves / pants all the time. A couple years ago there was a drought and no bugs. It was kinda nice ( for me, anyways).
  • No allergies but I hate bugs.
