Is anyone on Progesterone Suppositories? When are you stopping?

I didn't see this topic posted anywhere already so I apologize if this is a repeat but for those taking progesterone suppositories, when are you stopping? I'm taking them for low progesterone levels and I am currently 12 weeks. My RE's office told me I could stop (at 11 weeks) but it seemed early so I contacted the OB's office I was then referred to who told me they like people to continue them through the 1st trimester but said I need to refer to my RE since he prescribed it and not them. So since I had somewhat conflicting information, I decide to finish the bottle since I heard it couldn't hurt. That will get to me this weekend (I'll then be starting week 13). I was curious when others stopped taking it or were planning to stop. It's so scarey to stop but from everything I've read, the placenta is now formed so it should be safe - just still makes me nervous.

Re: Is anyone on Progesterone Suppositories? When are you stopping?

  • I'm on the oral not the suppositories but my OB told me to stop at 12 weeks. It makes me really nervous as well! I haven't taken one in 2 days now so FX everything is okay. Good luck to you! :)

  • I took Progesterone in Oil (PIO Shots) every night and my RE had me stop at 10 weeks. I was a little nervous to go off but I saw the heartbeat post PIO shots and have terrible MS now at 11 weeks so I'm feeling better about it.

  • I did shots, not suppositories, but I stopped cold turkey at 10 weeks (that's when my doctor said the placenta should take over progesterone production).  I was really nervous, too.  To alleviate my concerns, my doctor tested my progesterone levels three days after I stopped (took my last shot on a Friday night, went in for bloodwork on a Monday morning) to make sure my levels were ok (they were).  That was two and a half weeks ago, and so far so good.

  • I am on progesterone gel called Crinone twice a day I am stopping at 12 weeks

  • I was on shots and suppositories, stopped the shots at 9 weeks and the suppositories at 12.
  • I took them orally, dr. told me to stop at 10 weeks. I did, now I'm doing fine at 13.4 weeks. :D
  • I took suppositories as well, I was told to stop at twelve weeks. Good luck. :)
  • I take it orally, and my doctor said I could stop after the first trimester...but like everyone, I am terrified to do so.

  • Thank you so much everyone! That really makes me feel better. I have a few pills left to get me into 13 weeks and since it doesn't hurt to keep taking them, I'll finish those and then just take deep breath, pray, and try not to worry about it. Good luck everyone!!
  • I was on gel 1x a day and the suppositories 2x day until week 11. My doctor told me to keep using the suppository just once at night until my next appointment which will be 15 weeks. If it makes you feel better it doesn't hurt to keep using them. I'm glad my doctor said to keep using one at night it eases my mind a bit. Good luck!

  • I stopped at 10 weeks. Everything seems ok but it's only been a few days. I think I read somewhere that the levels go down after 10 weeks though, so maybe it's not as necessary?
  • I also stopped the suppositories at 10 weeks (last Thursday 8/29) and I was very nervous to stop. I just don't trust my body to know what to do. That being said, I did do progesterone shots with my first pregnancy following IVF, stopped at 10 weeks, and all was well. I have my NT screening 9/11 so we'll see what the level are in a little over a week. Glad to see that I'm not alone in having to take supplement and feeling the anxiety that goes along with going off them.

  • I'm on 200mg suppositories three times a day. Currently at 10 weeks, and Dr said I'll be on them until 15 weeks. Had low progesterone and also have: endometriosis, PCOS, and adendomyosis.
  • I'm taking Crinone and oral Prometrium 2x/day. At my appointment last Wednesday at 9w3d, my RE switched me to every other day for a week. That freaked me out and I'm supposed to stop I guess tomorrow. Eek.

  • My midwife told me to step down gradually. So, every other day for a week, then every third day until my prescription ran out. She said that stopping cold turkey could cause some spotting/bleeding.

That's what I've done with my last two pregnancies, starting at 12ish weeks, no issues.

I'm 10 weeks today and tempted to start cutting back... I should see how many I have left. I have a compounded prescription (since I have a kid with a peanut allergy, and Prometrium contains peanut oil) so it is crazy expensive and I'd rather not refill.

  • I stopped the suppositories at 13 weeks (last Wednesday was my last day). I am now 14 weeks today and had no issues over the last week. I too was nervous! The placenta is formed so you should be fine!!

  • I did the gel suppositories from week 4 through week 12.  I stopped last week when I ran out at 12w1d - no side effects.  I know my girlfriend who was on them had slight spotting when she stopped - I asked the doctor if this would happen she said its normal just call if its heavy.  So far so good!
