  It is used to remove mineral build up from hard water.
  
  Hot water strips help with detergent build up, but minerals often need something like RLR or washing soda to loosen them before they can be washed away.

  Washing soda is basicly super strength baking soda. It's in your laundry section atmost stores near the borax.
