Night nanny - payments & contracts

For those of you who had night nannies before --

We're debating about getting a night nanny for a couple months.  I've interviewed one and looking for a few more to meet.

If you found yours like me through forums or recommendations, how did you handle :
1. background check
2. contracts - do you need to write a contract with them?
3. payment - how did you pay them? is it tax deductible? (do i have to set up a payroll system??)

I want to go the easiest route with of course safety in mind, don't want to hire any crazy person & any legal issues later on.

Your advise is needed... thanks!!

Re: Night nanny - payments & contracts

  • We hired a night nurse for the first three months for both sets of twins (we used the same night nurse both times).  She was recommended to us from the local MoMs club--several MoMs had used her and she came highly recommended.  We loved loved loved her!!!  My husband travels for work so it was so nice knowing that after a long day I could hand over the babies, eat dinner, take a shower, and go to bed!  We didn't do a background check and we didn't have a contract with her--but if she hadn't come so highly recommended we probably would have done both.  We paid her weekly by check.  Here are some things to think about for a contract:
--What are her hours?  (ours came Sun-Thurs nights from 10pm-6:30am for the first 6 weeks then came Sun, Mon, Wed, Thurs for the second 6 weeks)
--How long will she come?  (ours came for the first 3 months but my 2nd set began sleeping through the night at 2 1/2 months so we negotiated her stopping then)
--What happens if she's sick/can't come?  (ours had a friend of hers that also worked part-time as a night nurse and she would sub for our night nurse if an emergency came up)
--What do you want the night nurse to do?  (in addition to caring for our twins, ours did the kids' laundry, sterilized the bottles, and made the formula for the next day).
--What qualifications are important to you?  (worked with twins before, cpr certified, etc. Our night nurse had worked as a L&D nurse and then after she had her own kids she became a night nurse.  She had been a night nurse for almost 30 yrs and most of her clients had multiples).

Good luck in finding a good fit for your and your twins.  Our night nurse was wonderful and she is like family to us!

  • We did not have a contract nor did we do a background check, but she came highly recommended by several moms from our local multiples group and I knew one of the families that had used her. We used her for 10 weeks starting when the boys were 3 weeks old.  At that point the boys were only waking once/night (though now we're in the 4 month sleep regression and considering having her come back a few nights a week if we don't get through this hump soon).

She also did the boys' laundry and did the bottles.

I'd ask what she does if both wake crying, how she feeds both at the same time, what her practices are for sleeping and getting them back to sleep. Experience with multiples?

we paid once/week by check - under the table.
